Iron Maiden reveals new touring drummer Simon Dawson

Iron Maiden shared in a statement that British drummer Simon Dawson will join the band as they return to the road for its 50th anniversary Run for Your Lives World Tour in 2025. Dawson replaces Nicko McBrain on drums, who performed his last shows with the band as they concluded their 2024 The Future Past Tour.

The band’s statement read: “Iron Maiden are delighted to announce that stepping in behind the kit for 2025 is a name familiar to many of our fans – Simon Dawson, a former session drummer and Steve’s rhythm section partner of the past 12 years with British Lion. A native of Suffolk, England, Simon first teamed up with Steve Harris back in 2012. He debuted on three tracks on the first British Lion album and all of the second critically acclaimed ‘The Burning’, plus the many subsequent tours in the US, UK, Europe, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and, most recently, both Mexico and South America.”

McBrain announced his touring retirement after 42 years, but said he will remain part of the band’s family with several projects in the works. McBrain shared on Iron Maiden’s website: “After much consideration, it is with both sorrow and joy, I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle.  I wish the band much success moving forward. I will, however, remain firmly part of the Iron Maiden family working on a variety of projects, my long time managers, Rod Smallwood and Andy Taylor, have in mind for me. I’ll also be working on a variety of different personal projects and focusing on my existing businesses and ventures, including The British Drum Company, Nicko McBrain’s Drum One, Titanium Tart, and of course, Rock-N-Roll Ribs!”

The 2025 Run for our Lives World Tour trek kicks off on May 27th in Budapest followed by 27 stadium, festival, and arena shows around Europe spanning over two-years.  For information, head to Iron Maiden’s official website.

Thousands evacuate after Los Angeles wildfires leave at least 5 dead, with new fire breaking out

Devastating wildfires continue to burn out of control, sparked by dry conditions and powerful winds, in the greater Los Angeles area. As of Thursday morning have killed at least 5 people and forced 100,000 people to evacuate from their homes. The fires are underway in areas not typically known for fires, with more than 350,000 energy customers without power early today in the area.

The five southern California wildfires in Los Angeles County –  located in Pacific Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, Woodley and Lidia – have destroyed at least 1,000 structures. The Palisades Fire – the most destructive in LA history – has burned through more than 17,234 acres (almost 27 square miles), destroying 1,000 structures and remains entirely uncontained.

Authorities reported five people as having died in the Eaton fire, which has increased to 10,600 acres in size late Wednesday afternoon, and the Hurst fire burned at least 505 acres, with the Woodley fire affecting at least 30 acres and the Lidia fire at least 80 acres.

The latest fire to develop, named the Sunset Fire, began shortly before 6 p.m. in the Hollywood Hills and has grown to 60 acres, threatening iconic landmarks.

President-elect Trump asks Supreme Court to intervene in hush money case sentencing

President-elect Donald Trump is seeking intervention from the Supreme Court to block the sentencing in his hush money case in New York, which is scheduled for Friday at 9:30 a.m. Earlier this week, New York Judge Juan Merchan declined to block Trump’s sentencing, despite repeated appeals from his attorneys.

In a request for emergency relief filed with the Supreme Court on Wednesday, Trump’s attorneys asked the justices to temporarily block further criminal proceedings in New York state court, including his upcoming sentencing, before he takes office.   Trump’s lawyers argued that the case should not go forward because the President-elect was protected by presidential immunity, as recognized by the Supreme Court earlier this year. They wrote: “This Court should enter an immediate stay of further proceedings in the New York trial court to prevent grave injustice and harm to the institution of the Presidency and the operations of the federal government.”  Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement: “The Supreme Court’s historic decision on Immunity, the Constitution, and established legal precedent mandate that this meritless hoax be immediately dismissed.”

In addition to asking the Supreme Court to enter a stay, Trump’s lawyers said they have simultaneously asked the New York Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, to block the proceedings. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who oversees requests for emergency relief arising from the 2nd Circuit, has ordered Manhattan prosecutors to respond to Trump’s bid by Thursday at 10 a.m. A spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said his office “will respond in court papers.”

Judge Merchan, who presided over the trial, initially postponed Trump’s scheduled sentencing in July in the wake of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision finding former presidents cannot be federally prosecuted for official actions taken while in office. Trump’s sentencing was then set for Sept. 18, but was pushed back again to avoid interfering with the presidential campaign. After Trump was elected to a second term in early November, a Nov. 26 hearing was then delayed as the president-elect and Manhattan prosecutors argued over how to proceed with the case. Merchan later concluded Trump does not have immunity until he is sworn in as president.

Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz dies at age 37

The Baltimore Orioles announced that their former pitcher Brian Matusz has died at the age of 37. The Orioles said Matusz died Tuesday; his cause of death was not disclosed.

The Orioles statement on X reads: “Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz. A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face. Brian’s family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”

The left-handed pitcher played at the University of San Diego where he was the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2008, leading him to be the fourth overall pick of that June’s MLB Draft by Baltimore. San Diego baseball head coach Brock Ungricht said in a news release: “Brian was one of the best players to ever wear a Torero uniform. His dedication to the USD community and passion for the game of baseball were evident to all who knew him. Brian’s unexpected passing leaves a void in our hearts, but his legacy will continue to inspire us, both on and off the field. We will forever be grateful for his friendship and unwavering support of San Diego baseball. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Matusz began his eight-year-long MLB career in 2009 with Baltimore, where he began his career as a starter. His best season as a starting pitcher came in 2010, when he went 10-12 with a 4.30 ERA over 32 starts. Matusz found more success later as a relief pitcher, appearing in 186 games out of Baltimore’s bullpen between 2013-2015. He posted a career-best 2.94 ERA over 58 relief appearances in 2015 for the Orioles. Matusz finished up his career pitching in one game for the 2016 Chicago Cubs, who went on to win the World Series that fall for the first time since 1908.

NC head coach Bill Belichick ‘in contact’ with Raiders, Tom Brady about possible NFL return

Per multiple sources and a report from the NFL Network, “multiple” NFL teams have approached new North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick about a possible return to the NFL – including the Las Vegas Raiders, where Tom Brady is a minority owner.

Multiple organizations are inquiring about whether Belichick would consider stepping down from his recently-acquired gig as North Carolina’s head football coach to resume his legendary career in the NFL.  Brady, Belichick’s long-time quarterback with the Patriots, is said to have recently spoke with his former coach about what it would take to make a reunion happen in Las Vegas.

The report from NFL Network states that Brady was in touch with Belichick while the Raiders were deciding the future of Antonio Pierce (who was fired by the Raiders on Tuesday). The Raiders have posted losing seasons in each of the past three years, and were 8-9 a season ago when Pierce took over for Josh McDaniels during the season.

Belichick accepted his new role as North Carolina’s head coach back in Dec. 11, and has been photographed making recruiting visits to high school prospects in recent weeks.  His contract with North Carolina has a $10 million buyout that drops to $1 million this summer. When he was asked during his introductory press conference if he would consider a return to the NFL if an opportunity presented itself, he replied: “I didn’t come here to leave.”

Ashley McBryde shares ‘Ain’t Enough Cowboy Songs’

Ashley McBryde has returned with the release of her song “Ain’t Enough Cowboy Songs”, produced by John Osborne.  The track is Ashley’s first new music since her summer EPs (which contained condensed compilations of her previous work divided by theme, sharing her storytelling in curated collections).

Ashley says of the track: “In the last several years, we’ve all felt like something is missing. I noticed it in myself and most people I came in contact with. And we don’t always know how to articulate it. For us, this song helped us do that … I always wanted a cowboy song of my own. I’m so thankful for the ones that got us here.”

McBryde adds: “Cowboys are the ones doing what needs to be done before it is an emergency. If you would simply be where you are, do what you say you’re gonna do and mean what you say when you say it, it would simplify a lot of things This one was all about where we live and the genre we love and realizing that the horse I rode in on got put out to pasture. Instead of us saying, ‘Work ethic’s out the window, stick-to-it code’s pretty much dead and idealism is gone,’ it was easier to say that by saying there is no wild out west. That’s all gone.”
