‘Goonies’ sequel in the works, with Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus producing

A Goonies sequel is in the works — with the producers from the original 1985 adventure film, Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus, returning for the new film.

Columbus wrote the original film’s screenplay, based on a story by Spielberg. The movie follows a group of children who embark on a treasure hunt in hopes of saving their homes from being sold and destroyed by a property development company. The film was a huge success at the time, earning $125 million worldwide — most notably , it became a monumental pop culture reference, renowned for its beloved characters and iconic catchphrases, including “Goonies never say die!”

Warner Bros. has tapped Potsy Ponciroli to write the forthcoming sequel. Spielberg and Columbus will return to produce the film with Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment, with Variety stating that Lauren Shuler Donner, widow the of the original film’s director Richard Donner (who died in 2021), to executive produce alongside Spielberg and Columbus. No director has been attached to the new project as of press time.

The original film starred a young Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan and Martha Plimpton. Per Deadline, it is unclear what the story for the new film will be, or who from the original cast (most of whom are now in their 50s) will return.

Lizzo drops her new single ‘Love in Real Life’

Lizzo has dropped her first new single since 2023 titled “Love in Real Life”, which is taken off her upcoming fifth full-length LP of the same name, dropping this summer.

The singer previously teased her upcoming release, saying that she reached “the end of a very special era. This album was my strut back into society after a hard 2020 and 2021. I wanted to help people turn up the music, turn down the lights and get a feeling they’ll be alright. I wanted to remind people of how they may be broken but still perfect in their own way. Twelve songs, 68 shows, 14 countries, 3 continents and nearly a million voices later we saw our specialness. We got through it together. I’m proud of the accolades, the Grammys, the Emmys, the Platinum plaque…. but I’m most proud of the legacy I’m leaving this world — lyrics that uplift you, music with real instruments, a reminder to dance and that it’s okay to cray… and high vibrations! I thank God every day that this is my job, and I don’t take it lightly.”

Alongside the release, Lizzo announced she’ll preview the upcoming Love in Real Life album at three intimate North American concerts. She’s set to perform at the Wiltern in Los Angeles on March 12, Irving Plaza in New York City on March 16 and First Avenue in Minneapolis on March 18.  For info, head to lizzomusic.com.

Remastered ‘Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party’ to stream on Paramount+

Paramount+ will release a remastered version of Cameron Crowe’s 1983 documentary Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party on March 11.

The long-lost documentary followed Petty and the Heartbreakers during their 1982-83 tour for the album Long After Dark, originally airing on MTV in 1983. The newly restored version of the film includes a new intro from Crowe, along with 20 minutes of previously unreleased footage, live performances, and footage of Petty and the band.  You can view a trailer for the restored film – HERE.

A press release reads: “The highly anticipated film, restored from its original 16mm source, is an era-defining look at rock & roll that captures Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers as they finish, promote and tour the groundbreaking Long After Dark album, the band’s third and final project with legendary producer Jimmy Iovine.”

The film was released in theaters back in October to coincide with Petty’s 74th birthday, but has remained unseen since its 1983 premiere on MTV; Crowe said in a statement: “Heartbreakers Beach Party occupies a special place in my heart. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers leaned into the making of the film with a kind of hilarious music-filled honesty that still feels fresh forty years later. I’m especially happy to add a postscript with the never-seen outtake footage I always treasured. The fact that the original film was yanked from MTV after only one airing shows that it was, and still is, an outlandish feast for fans in the best ways. Turn it up!!””

Supreme Court rules Trump administration must release frozen foreign aid payments

The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the Trump administration’s request to keep billions of dollars in foreign aid approved by Congress frozen, and ruled that the Trump administration must follow an order by a federal judge in Washington, D.C. that had directed the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development to pay nearly $2 billion in foreign-aid reimbursements for completed work on behalf of the United States government.

In a 5-4 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett sided with the three liberal justices regarding the payments without explanation regarding their conclusion, but the court did state that the district court judge who issued the order needs to better explain “what obligations the Government must fulfill to ensure compliance with the temporary restraining order,” while taking into account the reasonability of any related timelines.

In the brief unsigned opinion, the majority — consisting of Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and Ketanji Brown Jackson — wrote that “the District Court should clarify what obligations the Government must fulfill to ensure compliance with the temporary restraining order, with due regard for the feasibility of any compliance timelines.”

The majority noted that the administration had not challenged U.S. District Judge Amir Ali’s initial order, only the Feb. 26 deadline, which in any event passed last week; they told Ali to “clarify what obligations the government must fulfill to ensure compliance with the temporary restraining order, with due regard for the feasibility of any compliance timelines.”

Conservative Justice Samuel Alito wrote a scathing dissent, backed by Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh: “Does a single district-court judge who likely lacks jurisdiction have the unchecked power to compel the Government of the United States to pay out (and probably lose forever) 2 billion taxpayer dollars? The answer to that question should be an emphatic ‘No.’ But a majority of this Court apparently thinks otherwise. I am stunned.”

Democratic congressman and former Houston mayor Sylvester Turner dies at age 70

Former Houston mayor and first-term Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, has died Tuesday at the age of 70. Turner attended President Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday night, and had just taken the oath of office in January.

The cause of Turner’s death was not immediately clear. The 70-year-old said in 2022 that he had been treated for bone cancer, but declared himself “cancer free” in an interview with the Texas Tribune later that year.

Photographs and video from Trump’s joint address to Congress show Turner seated toward the back of the chamber; shortly before the address began, he posted a video on social media with his guest, Angela Hernandez, who was advocating for her daughter who has a rare genetic disorder. Turner said in the video: “Angela is here to advocate on the importance of Medicaid. So please let people know, ‘Don’t mess with Medicaid.’”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., referenced that video in his tribute to Turner: “The House Democratic Caucus family is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Congressman Sylvester Turner. Though he was newly elected to the Congress, Rep. Turner had a long and distinguished career in public service and spent decades fighting for the people of Houston. Like those before him, Rep. Turner was a fighter until the end — he was present yesterday evening to ensure that the voice of one of his constituents, who relies on Medicaid, was heard. In what would be his final message to his beloved constituents last night he reminded us ‘don’t mess with Medicaid.’”

Turner graduated from Harvard Law School and worked as an at attorney in Houston, serving more than a quarter century as a state lawmaker, and as mayor of Houston from 2016-2024. After longtime Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, died of pancreatic cancer in July of last year, Turner announced he would run for her seat and was selected by local Democratic leaders to appear on the November ballot (since Jackson Lee had already won her primary that March). He easily won the seat, and was sworn in on Jan. 3.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said in a statement posted by the City of Houston: “A remarkable public servant who impacted millions of people. He rose from poverty but never forgot where he came from. It is a terrible loss for the city and a personal loss for me. I ask Houstonians to celebrate his life.”

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said on X: “We’re saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Congressman Sylvester Turner, who represented Texas’s 18th District. He served his community faithfully, not only as a member of Congress, but as a former state legislator and a mayor of Houston. Our prayers are with his family and constituents as they mourn his loss.”

Chicago Bears acquire All-Pro guard Joe Thuney from Chiefs

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that the Chicago Bears are expected to trade for Kansas City Chiefs’ All-Pro guard Joe Thuney, in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick. The deal for Thuney won’t be official until the start of the new league year on March 12.

The 32-year-old Thuney was a first-team All-Pro in each of the last two seasons, starting all 17 games last season and missing just two starts for the Chiefs over the last four years. The nine-year veteran, who spent his first five seasons with the New England Patriots, joined the Chiefs in 2021. He won two Super Bowl titles with each franchise.

Thuney is set to become a free agent in 2025, and has one year left on his contract with a base salary of $15.5 million.  He received the seventh-best offensive rating among guards last season, according to Pro Football Focus, and received the second-best pass blocking grade and 12th-best run blocking grade. Thuney received the sixth-best offensive rating in 2023 and was the top-rated pass blocker at the position, and also rated as the top pass-blocking guard in 2022 and 2021.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Sam Hubbard retires from NFL at age 29

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Sam Hubbard announced Wednesday that he is retiring from the NFL. The veteran pass rusher signed a four-year, $40 million contract extension with the Bengals in 2021; his retirement will clear nearly $10 million in salary cap space for the Bengals.

Hubbard wrote on social media: “In my heart, I know that I gave this game, this team, and this city everything that I had. That is why today, with great pride, I am announcing that I am moving on from my playing career in the NFL and entering the next chapter of my life. As a kid growing up in Southwest Ohio, Cincinnati has always been, and will always be, home to my family and me. I bled orange and black before I ever put on a Bengals jersey. The journey that took me from a high school lacrosse player up 71-North to become a defensive end at The Ohio State University and back home again as a Bengals third-round pick in 2018, is something for which I am grateful for every day. From a draft pick to a starter, a 4x captain, and a guy who made a few plays along the way, we accomplished things that will never be forgotten. Breaking the 31-year playoff win drought, winning an AFC championship, back-to-back AFC North championships, a trip to the Super Bowl, and countless other memories. I woke up every day determined to give the fans something they could be proud of, cheer, and unite behind.  I want to send a sincere thank you to my teammates, coaches, trainers, support staff, Bengals ownership, and the NFL for everything you all have done for me. I could not have done any of this alone. To the fans — Who Dey Nation — I thank you the most; you inspired me. From the years of struggle and adversity to Super Bowl LVI, you never stopped believing. I hope I made you proud.”

Hubbard, a former Ohio State star, spent his entire seven-year career with the Bengals, joining the organization in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.  The Cincinnati native was active for 104 games during that span, making 88 starts for the franchise, and totaling 398 combined tackles, 55 tackles for a loss, 38.5 sacks, 16 passes defensed, six forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, an interception and a fumble recovery for a score during his NFL tenure.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor said: “Sam is the definition of what it means to be a professional, and I will always be grateful for the role he played as a leader for our team. Sam brought a championship mindset to work every single day with his dedication, commitment and passion for the game. He has proven to be a winner at every level of his career and helped get the most out of his teammates. Sam embraced his Cincinnati roots and created a lasting legacy on and off the field. I am certain he will continue to find success with everything the future brings for him.”

Bengals owner Mike Brown added: “Sam always has been and always will be a wonderful part of the Bengals organization and the entire Cincinnati community. Growing up here, he was a top youth athlete on local gridirons and lacrosse fields before becoming a standout football player at Ohio State. We were fortunate to draft him in 2018, and we immediately knew that we added an outstanding player and an even better person to our team. Sam epitomizes what you want in a player — he’s a great teammate, a talented athlete and a passionate community member.”
