Linda Cardellini to play Jason’s mother in ‘Friday the 13th’ prequel series ‘Crystal Lake’ on Peacock

Variety reports that Linda Cardellini will star as Pamela Voorhees in the “Friday the 13th” expanded prequel series at Peacock, titled “Crystal Lake”. Cardellini was also recently cast in a lead role in the upcoming HBO series “DTF St. Louis” alongside David Harbour and Jason Bateman.

Crystal Lake was originally picked up straight to series at Peacock in 2022, with Brad Caleb Kane serving as creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer of the series (whose premise is being kept under wraps). Those familiar with the “Friday the 13th” franchise will recall that Pamela Voorhees was the mother of Jason Voorhees, the hockey mask-wearing slasher featured throughout most of the films in the horror franchise.

In the original film from 1980, Jason is a child who drowns at Camp Crystal Lake while the negligent counselors were partying, and his death leads his mother, Pamela (portrayed by Betsy Palmer), to seek revenge on the new counselors when the camp re-opens. The role of Pamela has subsequently been played by Marilyn Poucher, Paula Shaw and Nana Visitor in various sequels, crossover and reboot movies.

The original “Friday the 13th”grossed nearly $60 million, and there have been eleven films in the franchise, including “Jason X,” “Freddy vs. Jason,” and the 2009 reboot. Jason became the main antagonist beginning with the second film.

Chris Brown ordered to remain in custody after arrest in U.K. stemming from 2023 assault

Chris Brown has been ordered to remain in custody until mid-June following a court appearance in the United Kingdom related to a nightclub incident that took place last year.

Brown’s upcoming world tour is now also in jeopardy after a judge in the U.K. ruled Friday that he must remain in custody while facing accusations that he assaulted a music producer with a bottle at a London nightclub in 2023. The artist is facing a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, stemming from an investigation conducted by London’s Metropolitan Police. If convicted, Brown could face a prison sentence ranging from two to 16 years.

The 36-year-old artist appeared in Manchester Magistrates’ Court to respond to the charges, and was denied bail. Judge Joanne Hirst denied the request for bail after prosecutor Hannah Nicholls described the incident as “extremely serious.”  Nicholls told the court that during a visit to the U.K. in February 2023, Brown allegedly launched an unprovoked assault on music producer Abe Diaw at the Tape nightclub, located in London’s upscale Mayfair district. According to her statement, Brown struck Diaw multiple times with a bottle before chasing him and continuing the attack by punching and kicking him. The entire incident was reportedly captured on the club’s security cameras, with numerous witnesses present.

Brown’s lawyer, Grace Forbes, argued that the artist posed no flight risk and urged the court to grant him release; however the judge ordered Brown remain in custody until his next court date on June 13 in London—which coincides with a scheduled performance in Frankfurt, Germany, which is part of the early leg of his international tour.  The judge also ruled that the case would proceed to Southwark Crown Court in London.

Brown’s international tour was set to begin June 8 in Amsterdam, featuring Jhene Aiko, Summer Walker, and Bryson Tiller. The North American leg is scheduled to kick off in July.

Foo Fighters and drummer Josh Freese part ways

The Foo Fighters and drummer Josh Freese have parted ways. The news comes two years after he was tapped to replace Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins following his death.

Freese shared the news via an Instagram statement on Friday, May 16th that the had been let go from the band: “The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they’ve decided ‘to go in a different direction with their drummer.’ No reason was given. Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band. In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry–just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine … Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reason Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters’ list.”

Freese was hired in March 2023 to replace Taylor Hawkins, following his unexpected passing in March 2022 while the band was on tour in South America. Aside from his work with Foo Fighters, Freese has also been the drummer for Devo since 1996 and has played with bands like Guns n’ Roses and Nine Inch Nails.

The band has been inactive since its last show in August 2024, after frontman and founder Dave Grohl revealed that he had fathered a child outside of his marriage to Jordyn Blum, his wife of more than 20 years. Per The Hollywood Reporter, a representative for the Foo Fighters didn’t immediately respond to request for comment on Freese’s firing, and it’s unclear who the band’s next drummer will be. The band’s next scheduled performance is this fall after F1 Qualifying during the Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday, October 4th. Elton John, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Crowded House are among the rock headliners of the three day event, set for October 3-5, at the Marina Bay Grandstand.
