Alice In Chains drummer Sean Kinney issues statement regarding his health

Alice In Chains drummer Sean Kinney has issued a statement on his recent medical emergency that forced the band to cancel their remaining 2025 tour and festival dates.

Kinney’s statement on the band’s social media reads: “The Good, The Bad & the WTF? Firstly, to everyone who came out to the Mohegan Sun show and was affected by the short-notice cancelation, and to everyone who had tickets to come see the band at one of the other shows, thanks for your understanding. It’s not lost on the band and myself that you spend money, make plans and alter your schedules to come and see us, and it’s deeply disappointing to have had this happen .. I was very much looking forward to getting back out there and playing with the band again, and it’s been a difficult but necessary decision to make. I don’t personally utilize social media and I’m not particularly fond of my health issues being made public, but I understand that people are concerned. When the doctors advised me against playing in the short-term, I quickly went through the 5 Stages of Grief:

1. Denial (I’m fine)
2. Anger (F— this, I’m still going to play)
3. Bargaining (What’s it gonna take for me to hear a better diagnosis?)
4. Depression (This sucks)
5. Acceptance (This sucks, but okay)

I finally concluded that medical doctors with many hard-earned degrees on their walls might know a bit more about health than a musician with some shiny spray-painted records on his wall. The outpouring of love, concern and well wishes has been both extremely humbling and very much appreciated … The good news is that I’m going to be fine and I’m going to live. … The bad news (for some of you?)  is that I’m going to be fine and I’m going to live.”

The band had initially canceled their May 8 performance at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Ct. after they announced that the drummer sustained a “non-life threatening medical emergency” during their soundcheck. The following day, the rest of their shows and festival appearances scheduled for 2025 were also cancelled, with the band revealing that Kinney required immediate medical condition, but had a positive long-term prognosis.

As of press time, Alice In Chains’ website still says they will play Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s “Back to the Beginning” show in July.

I PREVAIL announces split with vocalist Brian Burkheiser

I Prevail have announced they have parted ways with co-vocalist Brian Burkheiser. Burkheiser had been handling clean vocals for I Prevail alongside Eric Vanlerberghe since their formation in 2013.

The band’s statement on social media read: “To Our I Prevail Family — Today we share that we are mutually parting ways with Brian Burkheiser. This was a difficult decision, but we believe it is the right one and we are all grateful for the 10 epic years we shared together. We wish Brian nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors. Moving forward, Eric will continue to be the powerhouse frontman you’ve come to know and love. He’ll be backed up live by Dylan who you’ve seen in this role many times over the years at the shows we’ve performed without Brian. Rest assured, we will continue to deliver the high-energy shows that we’ve made a pillar of our band, and we will continue to perform all the bangers from our catalogue. All scheduled shows will go on exactly as planned. New music coming soon… See you out there. Eric, Steve, Dylan and Gabe”

I Prevail revealed in May 2024 that Burkheiser would sit out their scheduled tour due to a medical procedure, with Vanlerberghe and Bowman handling vocals. In a post at the time, Burkheiser explained that he underwent multiple surgeries for a disease called Eagle Syndrome. Burkheiser was present for I Prevail’s summer 2024 shows, and he welcomed a baby boy this past January with his wife, Caylin.  As of press time, it’s unclear if Burkheiser’s medical condition contributed to his departure from the band.

Vanlerberghe will handle all of the vocals going forward, with guitarist Dylan Bowman providing supporting vocals. I Prevail already played one show at the Sonic Temple festival in Columbus Ohio, and their next scheduled performance is on Saturday at the Welcome to Rockville fest.

Ed Sheeran shares video for ‘Old Phone’ from new album ‘Play’ dropping Sept. 12

Ed Sheeran has shared the official release date for his new album ‘Play’, dropping September 12th; and shared the video for his latest single, ‘Old Phone.’  The song marks the second single to be shared from ‘Play,’ following ‘Azizam’ (which was named after a Persian term of endearment that translates to “my dear” or “my beloved”).

Sheeran shared of the album in an Instagram post: “‘Play’ was an album that was made as a direct response to the darkest period of my life. Coming out of all of that I just wanted to create joy and technicolour, and explore cultures in the countries I was touring. I made this record all over the world, finished it in Goa, India, and had some of the most fun, explorative creative days of my life … It’s a real rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish, it encapsulates everything that I love about music, and the fun in it, but also where I am in life as a human, a partner, a father. Going into this album campaign I said to myself ‘I just want everything I do to be fun and playful’ – so that’s why we are building pubs for folk jams, doing gigs on open top busses and singing in pink cowboy hats on bars. The older I get the more I just want to enjoy things, and savour the moments that are mad and chaotic.”

‘Old Phone’ was inspired after Sheeran found old phone unused since 2015, and re-discovered old messages from friends and family members.  He teased the track by sharing an archival Instagram account called ‘Teddy’s Old Phone’, which sees him reflect on his life in 2015.  Sheeran said: “It felt like a time capsule, a time of life that I was in, and living at that time in 2015. Turning it on really spun me out, I found myself scrolling messages and conversations with people who are no longer here. I found myself crying at messages to friends who are now dead, who I won’t get to speak to again.  It feels like a song that should’ve been on my debut album, but also a song I couldn’t have written until I experienced real life things happening to me. It makes me emotional to sing, I hope it finds some emotion in you too. Maybe it makes you switch on your old phone and have a look at where you were a decade ago too. Whatever it does, I’m glad I wrote it.”

The “Old Phone” music video, directed by Emil Nava, begins with Sheeran explaining the inspiration behind the song and the idea for building the Old Phone Pub in Ipswich, Massachusetts, as well as showing footage from the Old Phone Pub being built, and Ed interacting with fans (interspersed with Ed looking at text messages and photos from his actual old phone) before culminating with Sheeran performing a gig at the Old Phone Pub. Ed writes on Instagram: “I wanted fans to all come to this special first pop up Old Phone pub gig to all be there for the same reason, and emotionally connected. I wanted everyone in that room to have felt the same feelings of nostalgia, longing, joy and sadness I had felt from going through my old phone. I asked all of them to submit a video, a photo or a message from their old phone that meant a lot to them to get into the gig that night, and we all shared in a night of music, dancing, laughing and tears. It was really magical, maybe my favourite music video I’ve ever made.”

Judge orders release of Georgetown scholar Badar Khan Suri after months in ICE custody

A federal judge in Virgina ordered the immediate release  of Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University, who faced deportation efforts under the Trump administration and had been held for months by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accused him of “spreading Hamas propaganda” and promoting antisemitic content on social media.

U.S. District Judge Patricia Giles ruled Wednesday that Khan Suri, an Indian national, be released on bond as his detention violated both his First Amendment right to free speech and his Fifth Amendment right to due process. Khan Suri had been confined at the Prairieland Detention Center in Texas after ICE arrested him on March 17.

Khan Suri’s arrest was part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to crack down on pro-Palestinian activists, including foreign students. Immigration authorities had revoked his J-1 student visa, claiming his father-in-law, Ahmed Yousef, once served as an adviser to Hamas leadership over ten years ago. Officials further accused Khan Suri of being deportable due to his pro-Palestinian social media posts. Yousef has clarified that his advisory role ended more than a decade ago and insisted that Khan Suri was never involved in political advocacy for Hamas.

Suri’s wife, Maphaz Ahmad Yousef, is also a Georgetown student and an American citizen originally from Gaza. Following the court’s decision, she shared her emotional reaction with reporters: “Her words [Judge Giles] brought me to tears. I wish I could personally thank her with a hug.”

Khan Suri is a senior postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown’s Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. Back in March, Judge Giles had already issued an emergency order blocking federal officials from deporting Khan Suri after his wife filed an urgent court request. After Wednesday’s ruling, Khan Suri is now free to reunite with his family and resume his academic work.

Suri said in a public statement: “I came here to build a life with my family — to work, go home, and raise my kids. And yet, they came, took me away, and shattered that life. I’ve studied injustices throughout my career. I just never imagined I’d experience this kind of injustice here.”

FAA holds talks with major airlines regarding flight delays at Newark Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began its meeting with major airlines on Wednesday to explore solutions for cutting down on flight delays and excessive scheduling during peak travel times at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. Wednesday’s meeting follows more than two weeks of widespread delays at Newark, caused by a combination of factors such as a shortage of air traffic controllers, runway work, and chronic congestion.

The FAA said that several persistent issues are contributing to the delays at Newark (EWR) in addition to the air traffic controller shortage — including the ongoing closure of Runway 4L/22R for construction, longstanding congestion problems, and outdated infrastructure. To address staffing shortages, the FAA has launched various incentive programs and expanded training initiatives to boost the number of air traffic controllers.

In a statement, the FAA acknowledged that Newark (EWR) remains “one of the nation’s most delay-prone airports.” For example, since July 2024, the Newark-area air traffic control facility has been operating below required staffing levels. While the facility is supposed to have 38 certified professional controllers (CPCs), only 24 are currently on duty. Similarly, the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control (which manages Newark’s airspace) is operating with 82 CPCs, significantly below its target of 114.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized during a recent press briefing the need for practical solutions to reduce passenger frustrations. “The objective is simple — we need a realistic number of flights arriving at Newark. Families shouldn’t be stuck at the airport for four or five hours waiting for a flight that won’t depart.” Duffy announced on May 8 a major overhaul of the country’s air traffic control infrastructure: “we are taking advantage of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to design and implement a completely modern air traffic control system.”

The FAA noted that Newark’s delays are further complicated by the dense volume of flights in and out of the broader New York City area. The interwoven airspace of Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia airports creates added pressure, especially when facilities like N90 (New York TRACON) are short-staffed.

These delays are expected to persist, with current FAA data revealing that average delays at Newark are around 85 minutes by 7 a.m. and can grow to as long as 137 minutes by late afternoon. Given these conditions, the FAA plans to recommend limiting flight operations to a maximum of 28 arrivals and 28 departures per hour. This cap of 56 total movements per hour would remain in effect until runway construction is completed.

The FAA stated, citing their operational analysis, that “the airport clearly cannot handle the current volume of scheduled flights …The proposed restrictions aim to ease congestion and improve reliability for travelers during this challenging period.”

Brett Young releases ‘Drink With You’

Brett Young debuted his newest single “Drink With You” after sharing details about his fourth studio album titled 2.0, produced by Jimmy Robbins and Dann Huff and set to drop on Friday, June 13th.

Young teamed up with Jesse Frasure, Tony Lucca and Emily Weisband to write “Drink With You,” described as “a pedal steel-stamped struggle of resisting alcohol-induced romantic temptations,” per a press release.  Young shares of the track: “‘Drink With You’ is a song about exes that can’t seem to make good decisions when they get together and there is alcohol involved. It’s a story as old as time about how it’s sometimes easy to fall back into old habits rather than move on.”

Young adds regarding the album: “It’s always my goal to be real and transparent and connect with my audience, whether that means writing a song about what happened yesterday or revisiting past experiences. It should always be about a connection with the listeners. 2.0 feels really special to me, and I’m very proud of it. I hope it makes people want to come out and see the live show even more.”
