Mass shooting at house party in North Carolina leaves 1 dead, 11 wounded

Authorities said that one person was killed and at least 11 others seriously injured early Sunday when gunfire broke out during a house party in Catawba County, North Carolina. The names of the victims and any potential suspects have not been released to the public.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement posted to Facebook that officers from the Hickory Police Department responded to a call around 12:45 a.m. on June 1 to report multiple people shot at a home on Walnut Acres Drive in the Mountain View area (about 57 miles northwest of Charlotte). The incident resulted in at least 12 people being shot. One person was pronounced dead, another was critically wounded, and several others were hospitalized with serious injuries, officials said.

During a press briefing, Major Aaron Turk of the sheriff’s office said the gunfire erupted during a party being held at the residence. When deputies arrived, they found multiple victims and immediately began providing emergency care. Investigators from the sheriff’s office, Hickory Police Department, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are currently working together to determine what led to the violence and to identify those involved. At this time, no suspects have been taken into custody.

According to ABC News, law enforcement reported that roughly 100 people were at the gathering when one or more individuals began shooting. Authorities have confirmed that more than one shooter was involved, though they have yet to determine an exact number. Turk noted that the violence extended beyond the house itself, spreading into the street, the backyard, and even into the neighboring yard, saying: “there does appear to be a specific reason behind this incident, possibly connected to the party itself.”

The investigation is still active, and officials are urging anyone with knowledge about what happened to reach out to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office by calling 828-464-3112.

One police officer killed, another hospitalized in Baldwin Park, CA shooting

One police officer was killed, and another is hospitalized after a suspect opened fire on Saturday night in Baldwin Park, California (which is located just east of Los Angeles).

At a press conference shortly after midnight, officials said Baldwin Park police responded to a call about gunshots and a person down at 7:12 p.m. at a residence in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue and Los Angeles Street. The call indicated that there was a person shooting rounds with a rifle at the scene. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said that when officers arrived, they were met by gunfire — two officers were struck and transported to L.A. General Medical Center in Lincoln Heights, where one of those officers was pronounced dead, while the other is in stable condition.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna during a press conference early Sunday morning: “When they arrived, they were met by gunfire. The call did indicate that there was an individual that was shooting rounds with a rifle, we’re still trying … to determine exactly what that was.”

Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez added during the press conference: “He answered a call of duty of shots fired to protect our residents in Baldwin Park. He and his other officer responded and as is customary with any police officer, or any sheriff’s deputy, they always respond and go into the fire. That’s what he did tonight. Tragically, he lost his life.” Lopez said that the officer was an “amazing man,” an avid Dodgers fan and snowboarder.

The second officer is said to be in stable condition and surrounded by family members; Lopez said: “it’s extremely tragic to have to deal with this. I ask for your prayers, I ask for the community to remember the officers and the deputies that go out there every day to push the black and white, making it safe for all of our families, our residents and the community as well.”

Luna said that the suspect had been taken into custody, though he did not provide details on where they were located. He said that the suspect was shot by police during the incident and taken to a hospital for treatment. He is in stable condition as of press time.

Tommy Paul makes history as first American man to reach French Open Quarterfinals since 2003

Tommy Paul has made history, becoming the first American men’s tennis player to advance to the French Open quarterfinals in 22 years with a straight-set victory over 25th-seeded Alexei Popyrin, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in Sunday’s fourth-round matchup. The feat makes Paul the first U.S. male player to reach this stage at the French Open since Andre Agassi did so in 2003.

Before his straight-sets win over Popyrin, the 12th-seeded Paul endured grueling five-set matches against Karen Khachanov and Marton Fucsovics in earlier rounds.   At 28, Paul has reached a new milestone in his career. Prior to this year, he had never made it past the third round at the French Open. Now, he’s among the tournament’s final eight contenders. According to the Associated Press, Paul also holds the distinction of being the only current American player to reach the quarterfinals on three different Grand Slam surfaces.

Back in 2003, Agassi’s own run ended in the quarterfinals with a loss to Argentina’s Guillermo Coria. That year’s championship ultimately went to Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Paul’s next opponent will be determined by the outcome of the quarterfinal match between Ben Shelton and Carlos Alcaraz, which is scheduled for Tuesday at Roland-Garros.

Dylan Marlowe, Conner Smith share video for ‘Country in the Clouds’

Dylan Marlowe has dropped the video for the new track, “Country In The Clouds,” featuring close friend and fellow artist Conner Smith.

The song was co-written by Marlowe alongside Brent Anderson, David Medlin, Jameson Rodgers, and Zach Abend, with Abend and Joe Fox producing the track. Marlowe shared, “Conner [Smith] is like a brother to me, so releasing this song with him is an awesome experience. We had a blast teasing it before the release. The song touches on themes like faith and the special memories I have growing up with family in Georgia, and it felt natural to dive into these topics. But we approached them in a fresh way. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!”

The duo recently wrapped up their co-headlining “Did We Just Become Best Friends?” Tour, which included stops in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida.  In addition to this release, Marlowe also unveiled “Picture Perfect,” a track he co-wrote with Dallas Davidson, Seth Ennis, and Joe Fox.

Marlowe will also be joining Bailey Zimmerman as a supporting act on Zimmerman’s New To Country Summer Tour, which kicks off this month.

Tommy Thayer, Sebastian Bach to be featured as part of KISS ‘Unmasked Electric Show’ in Las Vegas

Kiss has revealed more special guests for their upcoming Kiss Army Storms convention and reunion show in Las Vegas, including additional bandmates and fellow rockers.

During the weekend-long event taking place from Nov. 14 to 16 at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley will be joined by longtime Kiss lead guitarist Tommy Thayer for an unmasked electric show — marking the first reunion since their farewell tour ended in December 2023.

In addition, Thayer’s former band, Black ‘n Blue will also take part in the event, as will former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach. Additional guests include tribute bands Mr. Speed and Kiss Nation: The Kiss Tribute Show.

Kiss Army Storms Vegas will also feature Q&A sessions with members of the band, a panel with the band’s longtime manager Doc McGhee and special appearances from Kiss Army founders Bill Starkey and Jay Evans, and a performance from former Kiss lead guitarist Bruce Kulick.

Simmons recently shared of the event:  “The Kiss conventions begat the Kiss Kruise. We decided to do that, in essence, to get closer to the fans. Because when you’re up on that stage, whether you’re playing a stadium or arena, there’s all that energy going off the stage, visual and sound and all that. And even though there’s lots of energy coming from the fans up there, it’s not as personal, because there’s a lot of them … The fans are taking over the Virgin Hotel, so we’re attending to celebrate in the party. But this ain’t a Kiss concert, so we’ll be doing Q&A, and of course, we’ll play, we’ll get up there. So it’s much more informal. It’s kind of like a gathering of the tribes. We promised we would never tour again, and we’re not, but it’s a party celebrating the legacy and the fans, and we should be there, and that’s what’s going on.”
