Man accused of killing couple during hike in Arkansas pleads not guilty to murder charges

The man accused of fatally stabbing a couple while they were hiking with two of their daughters at Devil’s Den State Park in Arkansas pleaded not guilty to two capital murder charges on Thursday.

Andrew James McGann, a 28-year-old elementary school teacher, was captured and arrested in Springdale, Arkansas after a five-day search.  He was charged with two counts of capital murder in the killing of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, who were hiking with two of their daughters at Devil’s Den on July 26. The couple’s daughters, who are 7 and 9, were not hurt and are being cared for by family members. Devil’s Den is a 2,500-acre state park about 140 miles northwest of Little Rock, the capital city of Arkansas. The park is surrounded by the Ozark National Forest, and some hiking trails lead into those woods.

According to NBC affiliate KNWA-TV, McGann hardly spoke and showed little emotion during the arraignment, which lasted around 30 minutes. McGann’s lawyers from the county public defender’s office declined to comment. In a brief statement, the Washington County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said that “the state continues to pursue the death penalty” in the case.  He is being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center until the end of his trial; his next court date was scheduled for Nov. 14.

Investigators believe that Clinton was attacked first, while Cristen brought the kids to safety. Authorities said she then returned to help her husband before being attacked herself.  A witness reported seeing an individual with blood on his face leaving the park’s trail and getting into a black sedan, with a second witness identifying the black sedan as a Kia Stinger. McGann evaded authorities for several days after the Brinks were found dead, before authorities were able to match his car to the car described by the witnesses. He was arrested on July 30 in a barbershop while getting his hair cut in Springdale.

Authorities said that McGann’s DNA was found at the crime scene, and also made statements to investigators “indicating that he had committed these heinous acts.” Arkansas State Police Col. Mike Hagar previously said the killings appeared to be “a completely random event” because there’s “absolutely no indication, no reason whatsoever to believe there was any connection at all” between the Brinks and McGann. A motive for the attack remains unknown.

Officials said McGann recently moved to Arkansas for a new job at an elementary school in the Springdale Public School district, after teaching in various schools throughout Texas and Oklahoma.  McGann passed background checks for his employment by Oklahoma’s Education Department and for the two districts in the state where he taught. Officials also said McGann had no criminal history and no known mental illness history.

Florida Gov. DeSantis announces plans to open second immigration facility dubbed ‘Deportation Depot’

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that his administration is opening a second immigration detention facility dubbed “Deportation Depot.” The new facility in north Florida comes one month after the state opened a detention center in the Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz.”

DeSantis said at a news conference Thursday: “We are authorizing and will be soon opening this new illegal immigration detention, processing and deportation facility here in North Florida. We are calling this the Deportation Depot,” adding that more than 1,300 detainees will be held inside the facility at Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson, Florida, a temporarily closed state prison about 45 miles west of Jacksonville near Osceola National Forest.

DeSantis added: “We’ve been securing the border, enforcing immigration laws and removing illegal aliens who are in our society now, sending them back to their home country. We have done more on this than any other state by a country mile.”

Last week, a federal judge temporarily halted any further construction on the Alligator Alcatraz facility to prevent possible harm to the sensitive Everglades ecosystem. The state of Florida and the Trump administration can continue to use the facility and house detainees there, but any further construction must be halted for 14 days, per the judge’s order said.

Disciplinary hearing for Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice set for Sept. 30

NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Thursday that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is expected to have a disciplinary hearing with the NFL on Sept. 30 regarding potential punishment stemming from a 2024 crash that resulted in two third-degree felony charges. Rice played only four games for the Chiefs last season after suffering a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. He made 24 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns.

Former U.S. district judge Sue L. Robinson, who acts as the NFL and NFLPA’s jointly-appointed discplinary officer, will preside over the hearing. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rice will likely be eligible for the Chiefs’ first four games of the season.  The league and union have held talks about a possible settlement in the case, which could occur before the Sept. 30 hearing.

The news comes following word of Rice’s sentencing to 30 days in jail and five years’ probation for his part in the multi-vehicle crash in Dallas in March 2024.  Rice was driving a Lamborghini that was racing a Corvette involved in an accident with three other vehicles on a highway in northeast Dallas. According to a police report Rice was driving 119 mph just before the crash occurred; at least four people were injured in the crash.

Rice and the driver of the Corvette (allegedly Teddy Knox) fled the scene without providing any information or checking if anyone involved in the crash required medical attention. Rice later turned himself in to the police nine days after the incident, where he went on to face eight charges including six counts of collision causing bodily injury, one count of collision causing serious bodily injury and one count of aggravated assault.

Dallas County court records indicate that two people involved in the accident sued Rice and Knox for $1 million in negligence and punitive damages, which was later settled in favor of the plaintiffs.  The lawsuit claimed that numerous injuries from the crash included “trauma to the brain, lacerations to the face requiring stitches, multiple contusions about the body, disfigurement, internal bleeding, and other internal and external injuries that may only be fully revealed over the course of medical treatment.”

‘Slow Horses’ renewed at Apple TV+ for Season 7

Apple TV+ announced that Slow Horses has been renewed for Season 7. The news arrives ahead of the show’s Season 5 premiere, set for Sept. 24.

The dark comedy stars Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, the head of a group of British intelligence agents.  Season 5 will see the group try to figure out the deal with Roddy Ho’s (Christopher Chung) “glamorous new girlfriend.”

The series, inspired by Mick Herron’s Slough House books, got the green light for Season 6 in October. Apple TV+ executive Jay Hunt in a statement: “Slow Horses has won fans all over the world with its unique mix of self-deprecating British humor and high-octane action. I’m delighted viewers will have another season to enjoy Gary’s magnificent performance as Jackson Lamb alongside the Slow Horses’ slightly inept spycraft.”

Abigail Spencer joins Josh Charles in cast of Fox’s ‘Best Medicine’

Abigail Spencer will star alongside Josh Charles in the upcoming Fox medical comedy “Best Medicine,” based on the popular British series Doc Martin. Production will take place this summer in upstate New York.

The official description of the series states that “the series centers on Martin Best (Charles), a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. Unfortunately, Martin’s blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, especially local school teacher Louisa Glasson (Spencer), however tenacity is the creed of everyone in their small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered.”

Spencer’s character of Louisa Glasson was played by Caroline Catz in the British series, and appeared in all 10 seasons of the original series. Spencer is known for her roles across a wide variety of shows like “Suits,” “Rectify,” “Mad Men,” “True Detective,” “Timeless,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”  She recently wrapped production on “Clean Hands,” in which she will star opposite Zach Braff and Esther McGregor.

Megadeth announces final album and farewell tour

Megadeth founder and frontman Dave Mustaine has announced that the band will release a final album, in addition to embarking on a farewell tour. The announcement included the cover artwork for the band’s final album, but not the title.

The album – marking the band’s 17th studio project – will be released via Mustaine’s Tradecraft imprint in partnership with Frontiers Label Group’s new BLKIIBLK label early next year. The band will embark on a global farewell tour kicking off in 2026, with details to be announced later this year. More information on when preorders for the album will become available can be found at: www.megadeth.com.

In a video directly shared with his fans and “Cyber Army,” Mustaine shared the new via his alter ego ‘Vic Rattlehead’: “There’s so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional. Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now. I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them. We can’t wait for you to hear this album and see us on tour. If there was ever a perfect time for us to put out a new album, it’s now. If there was ever a perfect time to tour the world, it’s now. This is also a perfect time for us to tell you that it’s our last studio album. We’ve made a lot of friends over the years and I hope to see all of you on our global farewell tour. Don’t be mad, don’t be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years. We have done something together that’s truly wonderful and will probably never happen again. We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world and how it’s played, and we changed the world. The bands I played in have influenced the world. I love you all for it. Thank you for everything.”

Megadeth was first formed in 1983, after Mustaine was fired from the original lineup of Metallica before the group released their debut album. Megadeth would go on to become one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, releasing sixteen studio albums, five of which have gone platinum. Megadeth released their first album, Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good! in 1985, and they earned their first platinum album with the follow-up record Peace Sells … But Who’s Buying. Their most recent album, The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead! debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s 200 Albums chart back in 2022.

Mustaine revealed in 2019 that he was diagnosed with throat cancer, and the following year said he was cancer-free. He has been Megadeth’s frontman, guitarist and primary songwriter — as well as the band’s only consistent member over the decades. Megadeth’s current lineup is comprised or Mustaine, alongside bassist James LoMenzo, guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari and drummer Dirk Verbeuren. Mustaine also shared that he plans to release a new memoir in 2026.

Adam Levine is replaced with wife Behati Prinsloo in Maroon 5’s video for ‘All Night’

Maroon 5 released the official music video for “All Night,” starring frontman Adam Levine’s wife Behati Prinsloo in the role of the band’s “new lead singer.”

In a social media post, the band said the video, directed by Aerin Moreno, was inspired by Robert Palmer’s 1989 “Simply Irresistible” video. In that video, the singer stood in a black suit, singing in front of a group of expressionless women dressed in brightly colored minidresses. Levine told “Entertainment Tonight” — “Robert Palmer had this iconic video, but he was in front and he had these beautiful women in the back. Instead, we’re having B [Behati] in front. She’s the beautiful woman, and all of us less attractive guys in the back.”

All Night” is part of Maroon 5’s new album “Love is Like;” the band will also kick off a 23-city tour in Phoenix on October 6.
