Grateful Dead’s San Francisco concert film to hit IMAX theaters for band’s 60th anniversary

The Grateful Dead’s newly remastered 1977 concert film “The Grateful Dead Movie” will debut in 60 IMAX theaters across the country, in honor of the legendary band’s 60th anniversary.

Directed by Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia and documentarian Leon Gast, the movie was filmed during a five-night run at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in Oct. 1974, billed as “The Last One” (since at the time it was thought to be the band’s final performances.) The concerts featured the Dead’s “Wall of Sound” (the sound system that was designed specifically for the band and that redefined concert audio).

“The Grateful Dead Movie” also features interviews with band members and crew; David Lemieux, Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager, said in a statement that seeing the film in IMAX “was the greatest screening I’ve ever experienced of a film I’ve seen hundreds of times.”

The screenings are part of the Dead’s annual “Meet Up at the Movies,” an annual event where the band’s concert films or videos are screened, and will hit select theaters on Aug. 13, followed by a wide release on Aug. 14.

The “Meet Up at the Movies” event follows a three-day concert at Golden Gate Park Aug. 1-3. Held at Polo Fields, the concert will feature surviving members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart playing along with their band Dead & Company, which includes guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, pianist Jeff Chimenti and drummer Jay Lane.

Tickets are on sale at meetupatthemovies.com.

Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters swap drummers Ilan Rubin and Josh Freese

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Foo Fighters’ new drummer will be Nine Inch Nails’ Ilan Rubin. As of press time it was unclear whether Rubin is permanently a member of Foo Fighters or just a touring member, as the band had yet to publicly confirm the news. Foo Fighters’ next tour dates will kick off in Asia this October.

Rubin was with Nine Inch Nails for 16 years, where he’s served as the band’s touring drummer since 2009 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2020 (becoming the youngest-ever inductee at the time at age 32.)  He has also drummed for Paramore, Angels & Airwaves, and Danny Elfman, among others.

The news comes two months after Foo Fighters parted ways with Josh Freese — who in turn, has now joined NIN in Rubin’s place.  Freese had joined Foo Fighters in 2023 after the death of their longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins. After two years together, Freese announced in May that the band had let him go, saying they had decided “to go in a different direction with their drummer.” Freese said at the time: “I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry—just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine.”

Nine Inch Nails posted an Instagram story picturing Freese — who was also their drummer between 2005 and 2008 — with the caption, “Let’s f**king go.” Freese reposted the news on Instagram, with the caption: “Let’s F**king Go” is right! #nineinchnails #nin #joshfreese”.

Freese also wrote on Instagram after news broke of him rejoining NIN: “Leaving Nine Inch Nails at the end of 2008 was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. My wife and I were expecting our third child, and I knew I needed to step away from life on the road to be home with my family. NIN was a band that left me walking off stage every single night thinking, “That was incredible. We absolutely crushed it.” And it wasn’t just a feeling, it was a certainty. That level of intensity, pride, and satisfaction after each show is something I’ve rarely experienced anywhere else. Now, being back on tour with Trent and the crew—helping them do what they do best night after night—is something I’m incredibly excited about. To be part of that energy again feels amazing. If you get a chance to catch one of these shows over the next six weeks, I promise, they’re going to be absolutely unforgettable. Hope to see you out there.”

NIN are set to kick-off a North American tour at Oakland Arena on August 6.

See Addison Rae’s video for ‘Headphones On’

Addison Rae has released the new song “Headphones On,” the fourth song off her upcoming debut LP, tentatively scheduled to drop on June 6. “Headphones On” follows the February release of “High Fashion,” which dropped after last year’s hit single, “Diet Pepsi” as well as the track “Aquamarine.”

Co-written and produced by Luka Kloser and Elvira Anderfjärd, “Headphones On” was released alongside a music video filmed in Reykjavik, Iceland. The video opens with Rae behind the counter in a pink-and-red rain jacket, playing a cashier. Scenes of her riding a horse through open landscapes are woven throughout. In a message shared on social media, Rae described the personal connection she feels to the track: “This song is deeply connected to me in so many ways. Writing it was healing, emotional, and extremely spiritual. Every good thing comes my way. Because I choose to be good.”

Rae released her debut single, “Obsessed,” in 2021, and she shared her first EP, AR, in 2023.

Benson Boone shares video for ‘Mr. Electric Blue’ off new album

Benson Boone dropped the tongue-in-cheek music video for his new single, “Mr. Electric Blue,” taken off his sophomore album, American Heart.

The new 10-song project arrives ahead of Boone’s forthcoming American Heart North American arena tour, which is set to hit Madison Square Garden in New York and the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles after kicking off in St. Paul, Minnesota in August.
