Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone wins 400m world with second-fastest time ever, nearly breaking record

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone nearly broke the longest-standing world record in the flat 400-meter race to win her first title at the world championships on Thursday, after dominating the hurdles for the past four years.

McLaughlin-Levrone became the first woman in nearly 40 years to crack 48 seconds in the 400 meters; she clocked in at 47.78 seconds in Tokyo, the second-fastest time in history behind German Marita Koch’s world record of 47.60 set on Oct. 6, 1985 at a World Cup meet in Canberra, Australia.

Second-place finisher Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic ran 47.98, the third-fastest time in history, coming one year after she won Olympic gold in the event. Bahraini sprinter Salwa Eid Naser, who recorded the fifth-best time (48.14) in history in 2019, finished behind McLaughlin-Levrone and Paulino on Thursday with a time of 48.19.

McLaughlin-Levrone said at the World Athletics Championships at Japan National Stadium in Tokyo: “I knew it was going to be a fast race, great competition. Just to see it all come together there is always a bit of awe and wonder .. I’m just grateful. You know it’s there and you know you put the work in. To see it come to fruition, it’s always a bit of disbelief.”  When asked if the world record is a goal, McLaughlin-Levrone replied: “I think barriers are broken when the time is right. I think records come when they’re supposed to. It’s really just about executing and trusting the process.”

McLaughlin-Levrone, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time world record breaker in the 400m hurdles, is now the first person to win world titles in both one-lap events. She also planned to race the flat 400m instead of the 400m hurdles at the 2023 Worlds, but withdrew before the meet due to injury.

I got to make the video with Dale Jr. and Richard Petty, which is a total dream come true. The Cult reveal ‘Death Cult’ 2025 North American tour

The Cult will celebrate their earlier iteration, Death Cult and embark on a North American tour, featuring The Cult singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy.

Initially known as Death Cult when they formed in 1983, the British group shortened their name to The Cult in January 1984. In the mid-1980s, The Cult gained a strong following in the UK with a post-punk and gothic rock sound, exemplified by singles like “She Sells Sanctuary.”  In the late 1980s, they shifted towards a harder rock sound, breaking into the mainstream in the United States, largely influenced by producer Rick Rubin on their 1987 album Electric, which featured hits like “Love Removal Machine.”

Internal tensions and substance abuse issues led to a split in 1995; however, they reunited in 1999, before going on hiatus again in 2002. Upon reforming in 2006, they continued to tour and release new material – their most recent album, Under the Midnight Sun, dropped in 2022.

The group describe the upcoming trek as “a communal gathering of the tribes featuring sets from Death Cult and the Cult” in a press release.  The three-week tour begins on Oct. 9 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and concludes on Oct. 30 in Los Angeles. Special guests on the trek will be the Los Angeles band Patriarchy. The shows will feature one set as Death Cult, and one as The Cult.

Take a listen to SHINEDOWN’s ‘Killing Fields’

Shinedown have released new song “Killing Fields,” their third single of 2025 following “Dance, Kid, Dance” and “Three Six Five.”

The band posted on Instagram: “KILLING FIELDS. OUT NOW. Favorite lyric? Thoughts? Feelings? Emotions??? Leave a comment down below ⬇

Says frontman Brent Smith: “‘Killing Fields’ is not a song that has one specific meaning. The subject matter in this song cannot be prioritized to one specific opinion. The audience is the BOSS, and they should have the freedom to interpret it the way they hear it, feel it, and experience it. What I will say is that the song is meant to push you, to inspire you to think for yourself, and ask questions. We all know we are living in complicated times… The true question is, how will you respond.”

Shinedown kicked off the summer leg of their 2025 tour on July 19th at TD Garden in Boston featuring support from Bush and Morgan Wade, and will wrap up their run August 30th with a final gig at the FedExForum in Memphis

See the video for Dasha’s new single ‘Like it Like That’

Country-pop artist Dasha returns with her latest single, ‘Like It Like That,’ alongside the official music video starring Love Island’s Rob Rausch.

“Like It Like That” was written by Dasha with David Garcia, JKash, and Gian Stone, and follows the previously-released tracks “Not At This Party” and “Oh, Anna!,” the first two singles from her upcoming project.

Dasha shares of her new song: “‘Like It Like That’ is about letting go of that pressure to get love ‘right’ and embracing the moments that don’t fit the plan. At this point in my life, I’m not trying to have it all figured out—sometimes the so-called wrong person is exactly right for right now. I think there’s so much pressure to meet ‘the one’ and get it right on the first try, especially for women, but I’m 25. I’m not looking for perfection; I’m looking for good stories and chasing feelings that I can get songs out of. I have no idea what I’m doing half the time, and I’m still learning parts of myself…I think everyone my age is doing the same. I don’t want to meet my person yet; I’m not ready for that chapter of life yet. No pressure, no plan, just whatever makes your heart skip a couple of beats and reminds you that that’s what living is supposed to feel like sometimes. Letting things be what they are, and heck, maybe that’s eating takeout with a man who can only be a bad idea at 2 am.”
