Trump appoints White House aide Lindsey Halligan to lead federal prosecutor’s office in Virginia

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he will nominate Lindsey Halligan, one of his past defense lawyers, to head the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Halligan, who is currently working in the White House staff secretary’s office, briefly represented Trump during the Justice Department’s classified documents investigation. The move comes amid heightened tensions between Trump and top Justice Department officials. Just hours before announcing Halligan’s nomination, Trump appeared to criticize U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi over the pace of investigations into his political rivals, though he later said Bondi was doing a “great job.”

Trump unveiled the decision on his social media platform, writing: “Pam Bondi is doing a GREAT job as Attorney General of the United States. She is very careful, very smart, loves our Country, but needs a tough prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, like my recommendation, Lindsey Halligan, to get things moving. What we don’t need is a Democrat Endorsed “Republican.” I will be nominating Lindsey Halligan to be the United States Attorney in this very important part of our Great Country. She will be Fair, Smart, and will provide, desperately needed, JUSTICE FOR ALL”

Trump praised Halligan, recalling her defense of him during the FBI’s search of his Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022. “She witnessed firsthand the weaponization of our justice system by Crooked Joe Biden and the radical left Democrats,” he wrote in another post.

The announcement followed the abrupt resignation of Erik Siebert, the previous U.S. attorney, who stepped down after clashing with Trump administration officials. According to sources, Siebert resisted pressure to pursue criminal charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James despite investigators finding no clear evidence of mortgage fraud.

Halligan, who has never worked as a prosecutor, is licensed to practice law in Florida and previously specialized in insurance claims before joining Trump’s legal team. From her role in the White House, she has also been involved in efforts to challenge what the administration calls “radical ideology” within Smithsonian Institution museums.

Mr. Trump’s selection of Halligan came just hours after Justice Department official Mary “Maggie” Cleary said in an internal email to staff that that she had been named acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, until Halligan’s nomination is formally considered. Cleary told employees in the email: “While this appointment was unexpected, I am humbled to be joining your ranks. The Eastern District of Virginia has a distinguished legacy upon which we will build.”

President Trump, Charlie Kirk’s widow Erika speak during his memorial service in Arizona

A memorial service for conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was held Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Arizona. Roughly 95,000 people filled the stadium, with an additional overflow attending at a venue outside Phoenix, for the public memorial honoring Kirk. Speakers included President Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, as well as other prominent conservatives and administration officials.

President Donald Trump addressed the massive crowd with an extended speech, describing Kirk as a “martyr” who gave his life for “American freedom.” One of the evening’s most poignant moments came from Kirk’s widow, Erika, who told the audience she had chosen to forgive the man accused of taking her husband’s life.

Faith and politics were central themes throughout the memorial. Speakers portrayed Kirk not only as a Christian evangelist but also as someone whose death carried the weight of martyrdom. The gathering also featured sharp rebukes of political adversaries, alongside passionate calls for national revival and what organizers described as “spiritual warfare.”

Kirk, who was just 31, was shot and killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. Authorities have charged Tyler Robinson, 22, with aggravated murder and several related offenses in connection with the attack.

For further details and takeaways on the memorial for Charlie Kirk, head to news outlets ABC.com, NBC.com, CBS.com, or CNN.com.

A’ja Wilson earns record-breaking fourth WNBA MVP Title

Las Vegas Aces star A’ja was officially named the 2025 WNBA Most Valuable Player on Sunday, making history as the first player in league history to capture the honor four times.

The news was first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, who wrote on X (per sources): “Breaking: Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson has won the 2025 WNBA MVP award, becoming the first player in league history to win the honor four times”

Wilson was named MVP in what had been considered a tight battle with Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier. Wilson ultimately received 51 first-place votes and 657 points to finish ahead of Collier in second (18 first-place votes, 534 points). Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas (3rd, 3 first-place votes, 391 points), Atlanta Dream guard Allisha Gray (4th, 180) and Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell (5th, 93) were also finalists for the award.

Wilson’s MVP trophy is just the latest addition to her collection this season. Earlier in the year, she shared the Defensive Player of the Year award with Minnesota Lynx forward Alanna Smith, marking the first time the league has ever split that honor. It also marks the first season Wilson has claimed both awards simultaneously. Wilson led the WNBA with averages of 23.4 points and 2.3 blocks per game for the second-seeded Aces while also contributing 10.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest.

This year’s award puts Wilson ahead of three-time MVPs Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Lauren Jackson. In 2024, Wilson joined Cynthia Cooper of the 1997 Houston Comets as the WNBA’s only unanimous MVP selections; Cooper also is the only other back-to-back honoree, winning the award in the WNBA’s first two seasons (1997, 1998).

Over her career, Wilson has earned two WNBA championships (and is still in contention for a third this year), seven All-Star selections, two Defensive Player of the Year awards, two scoring titles, five block titles, and two Olympic gold medals. She has accomplished all of this in just eight seasons—before even turning 30.

Max Verstappen secures victory in Azerbaijan Grand Prix as Oscar Piastri crashes out on first lap

Max Verstappen continued his resurgence in Formula One with a commanding win at Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, his second straight triumph of the season.

The four-time world champion started from pole after a turbulent qualifying session and never looked back, pulling away cleanly at the start in Baku and controlling the race from the front.

“This has been an amazing weekend for us. Last race already felt great, but to come here and win again is just fantastic,” Verstappen said afterward. “It felt straightforward today, though driving here is never simple—the wind made the car move around a lot. But overall, I’m really pleased with the performance.” He previously celebrated victory on the Baku City Circuit in 2022.

The Red Bull driver has struggled at times this year compared to his usual dominance, with his Monza win marking his first since mid-May. Back-to-back victories now signal his strongest run of the season.

For championship leader Oscar Piastri, however, it was a disastrous outing. The Australian’s race ended less than halfway through the opening lap when he clipped the wall at turn five. He had already endured a rough qualifying session that left him ninth on the grid and looked unsettled from the start, false-starting before dropping to the back of the pack and eventually crashing out. Forced to retire, he spent the rest of the race trackside.

His misfortune created an opportunity for teammate Lando Norris to close the points gap, but Norris couldn’t capitalize. Starting seventh after his own brush with the wall in qualifying, he never threatened the leaders. A slow pit stop on lap 38 sealed his fate, leaving him in seventh at the checkered flag.

The lackluster results from both drivers also cost McLaren a chance to lock up the constructors’ championship. Mercedes, on the other hand, enjoyed a strong afternoon. George Russell, still recovering from illness, battled through to claim second place, while 19-year-old rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli impressed with a fourth-place finish. Williams celebrated a breakthrough moment as Carlos Sainz secured third, delivering the team’s first podium finish since 2021. The Spaniard described it as the highlight of his career.
