U.S. military carries out two more strikes on alleged drug-trafficking boats in the Pacific, killing five

The U.S. carried out two more strikes on alleged drug vessels this week—this time on the Pacific side of Latin America—killing five people and marking a major expansion of the Trump administration’s anti-narcotics campaign. No U.S. personnel were injured in either operation, officials confirmed.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed that the military conducted the lethal strikes on two consecutive days against the boats in the eastern Pacific — the eighth and ninth known strikes by the US military on alleged drug-smuggling vessels since the start of September — with all seven previous strikes targeting boats in the Caribbean Sea. The first strike occurred Tuesday in international waters off Colombia, killing two people. A second, in the eastern Pacific on Wednesday, left three more dead. At least 37 people in total have been killed in the nine strikes.

Hegseth said on X Wednesday, noting a Tuesday strike in the Pacific had killed both people on board, that “Narco-terrorists intending to bring poison to our shores, will find no safe harbor anywhere in our hemisphere.”  Hegseth said the boat in that strike was “being operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization(s) and conducting narco-trafficking in the Eastern Pacific. … Narco-terrorists intending to bring poison to our shores, will find no safe harbor anywhere in our hemisphere. Just as Al Qaeda waged war on our homeland, these cartels are waging war on our border and our people. There will be no refuge or forgiveness — only justice.”

Hegseth later said the US conducted a lethal strike on a second suspected drug boat in the eastern Pacific, killing all three people on board:  “Today, at the direction of President Trump, the Department of War carried out yet another lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization (DTO),” Hegseth wrote on X.

At a White House briefing on Wednesday, President Donald Trump said the administration is preparing to take the fight beyond the seas: “They had one today in the Pacific, and the way I look at it — every time I look — because it is violent and it is very — it’s amazing, the weaponry, you know they have these boats that go 45 to 50 miles an hour in the water, and when you look at the accuracy and the power — look, we have the greatest military in the world.” Trump added that the naval operations have disrupted maritime smuggling routes and forced traffickers to move shipments inland.

Trump also indicated that future U.S. action could include strikes on land targets: “We will hit them very hard when they come in by land. They haven’t experienced that yet, but now we are totally prepared to do that,” while emphasizing that while he would “probably go back to Congress and explain exactly what we are doing,” he believes such approval is not legally required.

While the administration has labeled the targeted cartels as “terrorist organizations,” that classification has drawn backlash from critics who are pressing for more transparency—and a clearer legal justification—before the campaign moves to land-based targets.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Heat’s Terry Rozier among those arrested in federal gambling, organized crime probe

Federal authorities announced Thursday that more than 30 people across 11 states — including Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player Damon Jones — have been charged in a pair of nationwide investigations into illegal sports gambling poker rigging schemes connected to organized crime. Federal prosecutors emphasized that the ongoing investigation does not currently involve college basketball.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced at a news conference that the federal takedown includes charges including wire fraud, money laundering, extortion, robbery and illegal gambling, stating that “the fraud is mind-boggling.”  Patel described the arrests as “extraordinary,” noting that theinvestigation not only exposed “fraud that these perpetrators committed on the grand stage of the NBA,” but also dealt a major blow to “La Casa Nostra,” referencing the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Luchei crime families.

The large-scale operation, coordinated by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, uncovered two interconnected criminal enterprises: one involving fraudulent sports bets placed by current and former NBA players, and another centered on high-stakes poker games allegedly rigged with advanced cheating technology and tied to multiple Mafia families.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that the profits from the alleged poker scheme ran up to $7 million “and counting,” with the investigation taking place across two years. Authorities said some NBA players involved in the betting ring allegedly faked injuries to influence game outcomes, while others laundered their proceeds through shell companies, cash transactions, and cryptocurrency transfers. The sweeping federal effort, dubbed “Operation Nothing But Net,” led to arrests across multiple states and included charges such as wire fraud, money laundering, illegal gambling, robbery, and extortion.  Commissioner Tisch confirmed that organized crime associates were among those detained.

U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella, Jr. said the suspects allegedly used “very sophisticated cheating technologies” in the underground poker operation, including altered self-shuffling machines capable of reading cards and predicting the strongest hands at the table. That information was allegedly transmitted to an off-site operator, who then relayed it to a designated player — known as the “quarterback” — to secretly signal the winning strategy to others in on the scheme. Nocella added that the suspects “used high-tech cheating technology to steal millions of dollars from secretly rigged underground poker games.” Prosecutors said the poker games were backed by the Bonanno, Gambino, and Genovese families and that some defendants in the second case had direct ties to these organized crime groups.

Billups was taken into custody in Portland and charged in connection with the poker and organized crime case; while Rozier was arrested in Orlando and faces charges related to the alleged sports betting conspiracy.

Jones, a former Cleveland Cavaliers player and assistant coach, was implicated in both investigations after he allegedly provided inside information about NBA games to co-defendants who used it to place sports bets. According to Nocella, six defendants are accused of their involvement in the sports betting case, while there are 31 defendants allegedly involved in the rigged poker games. Jones is one of three people allegedly involved in both cases, Nocella said.

Rozier, a 10-year NBA veteran originally drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2015, joined the Miami Heat in 2024 after a stint with the Charlotte Hornets. His attorney, Jim Trusty, criticized how the arrest was handled, saying, “They characterized Terry as a subject, not a target, but at 6 a.m. this morning they called to tell me FBI agents were trying to arrest him in a hotel.  It is unfortunate that instead of allowing him to self-surrender, they opted for a photo-op.” He accused prosecutors of “taking the word of spectacularly in-credible sources rather than relying on actual evidence of wrongdoing,” adding that “Terry was cleared by the NBA” and is “not afraid of a fight.”

Billups, 49, a five-time NBA All-Star and the 2004 Finals MVP known as “Mr. Big Shot,” has been the Trail Blazers’ head coach since 2021 after a celebrated 17-year playing career that culminated in his Hall of Fame induction in 2024. Neither Billups nor his representatives have commented on the charges.

The NBA later released the following statement: “We are in the process of reviewing the federal indictments announced today. Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups are being placed on immediate leave from their teams, and we will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities. We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and the integrity of our game remains our top priority.”

Lionel Messi signs new contract extension to stay with Inter Miami through 2028

Inter Miami announced Thursday that Lionel Messi has agreed to a new contract extension, securing the Argentine superstar’s place with the club through the 2028 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

The club unveiled the news with a video of Messi signing on the field of Miami Freedom Park, the privately funded 25,000-seat stadium set to open next season. Inter Miami will move from Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale to the new venue in 2026.

Messi, 38, joined Inter Miami in 2023 as a Designated Player and has since delivered historic success on and off the field. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner led MLS with 29 goals this season, securing his first Golden Boot after recording a hat trick in Saturday’s 5–2 win over Nashville in the regular-season finale.

Messi said in a statement released by the team: “It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality — playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park. Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here. We’re all really excited about the moment when we can finally play at Miami Freedom Park. We can’t wait for it to be finished — to experience it from the inside, in our new home, and for the fans to enjoy it as well. It’s going to be something very special to play at home in such a spectacular stadium.”

Co-owner Jorge Mas said keeping Messi was central to the team’s vision: “We promised our fans that we would dream big to build an iconic club. A club that represents the passion, hard work and dedication of all those that came before us to create a Miami built on dreams. Leo signing through 2028 is an ode to our amazing city. We very much look forward to writing new chapters at our stadium at Miami Freedom Park. Together we will continue building and dreaming.”

Co-owner David Beckham added: “Our vision was to bring the best players to Inter Miami and to this city, and that’s exactly what we have done. We brought the best player to have ever played the game to our city. … He’s still as committed as he’s ever been and he still wants to win.”

Since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, Messi has transformed the franchise both on and off the field. He guided Inter Miami to its first major trophy — the 2023 Leagues Cup — followed by the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, and was named league MVP that same year. Across all competitions, he has tallied 71 goals and 37 assists in 82 appearances.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber praised Messi’s continued presence as a transformative moment for North American soccer: “When Lionel Messi made MLS his league of choice, it marked a turning point — not just for Inter Miami, but for our entire sport in North America. Since then, we’ve witnessed something truly historic: the greatest player of all time bringing global attention to our league. We’re thrilled that Leo has chosen to stay and continue his career with Inter Miami.”

After back-to-back postseason disappointments, Miami begins its 2025 playoff campaign Friday against Nashville SC in a best-of-three series as Messi seeks his first MLS Cup title.

Annette Bening joins cast of ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘The Dutton Ranch’

Annette Bening has joined the cast of the Yellowstone ‘Beth and Rip’ spinoff series titled ‘The Dutton Ranch’ for Paramount+, executive produced by Taylor Sheridan. Chad Feehan (‘Ray Donovan,’ ‘Banshee’) has been named showrunner.

Bening will star opposite Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser and Finn Little, who will reprise their original roles. The show is expected to remain on the same present-day timeline as the original series. Bening will play Beulah Jackson, the “powerful, cunning and charming head of a major ranch in Texas.”

Yellowstone followed the Dutton family, a powerful Montana ranching family that controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. Beth (Reilly) is John Dutton III’s (Kevin Costner) daughter, a former head of acquisitions at the Schwartz & Meyer financial firm.  Jaded ranch foreman Rip (Houser), who first came to John Dutton as a young boy on the run after killing his stepfather to protect his mother, learned how to be a cowboy from John, who treated him like a son. Yellowstone ended with Beth, Rip and their adopted son Carter (Finn Little) setting off to start their own smaller ranch in search of a peaceful life.

The Yellowstone Universe also includes prequel series ‘1883’ and ‘1923,’ both of which have concluded their runs. Two other upcoming offshoots include: ‘The Madison’ for Paramount+, led by Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn, and ‘Y: Marshals’ for CBS, led by Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton. Additional universe entries that were previously announced as being in development include ‘1944’ and ‘6666’.

Bening will next be seen in the Apple TV+ limited series Lucky opposite Anya Taylor-Joy.

Depeche Mode to physically release ‘M’ concert film, live album ‘Memento Mori: Mexico City’

As Depeche Mode gear up to release their new concert film ‘Depeche Mode: M’ on October 28th, the band have announced the physical release for both the film and its accompanying live album, Memento Mori: Mexico City, due out on December 5th.

The concert film will be spread across two discs—available in either DVD or Blu-ray format—alongside two CDs. The first disc features the complete Depeche Mode: M film, which blends live performances with archival clips and additional footage showcasing both the band and the culture of Mexico. The second disc, titled Memento Mori: Mexico City, focuses solely on the band’s live performances from their Mexico City shows, presented in full setlist order. Each bundle will also include a copy of the live album.

The Memento Mori: Mexico City live album will be released separately as a two-CD or four-LP vinyl set. Both formats capture more than two hours of music from Depeche Mode’s three-night residency at Foro Sol during their Memento Mori world tour. Fans can also look forward to four unreleased songs from the Memento Mori sessions — “Survive,” “Life 2.0,” “Give Yourself To Me,” and “In the End,” with the latter set to debut as a single on Friday, October 24. Both editions will feature exclusive photographs from the Mexico City performances.

Depeche Mode: M, directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Fernando Frías,  follows Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, and their touring band through three sold-out nights at Foro Sol. Frías interlaces concert footage with scenes capturing Mexico’s culture, with the film also marking Depeche Mode’s first major tour since the passing of founding member Andy Fletcher in 2022.

Dave Gahan said in a press release of the film: “At its core, our new film ‘M’ is about the deep connection between music, culture, and people — and Fernando Frías, who directed and conceived the film, did a beautiful job telling that story that through the lens of Mexican culture and our shows in Mexico City.”

Depeche Mode: M will premiere in select theaters on October 28, while the live album and physical editions of both Depeche Mode: M and Memento Mori: Mexico City will be released on December 5.
