Eagles acquire edge rusher Jaelan Phillips from Dolphins in pre-deadline trade

The Philadelphia Eagles have reached an agreement to acquire edge rusher Jaelan Phillips from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The move comes as Philadelphia continues to aggressively strengthen its roster ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. Over the past week, the defending Super Bowl champions also traded for cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Michael Carter, signaling a clear push to reinforce their defense for another postseason run.

Phillips, 26, was selected 18th overall by Miami in the 2021 NFL Draft and has compiled 26 career sacks over five seasons with the team. This year, he’s recorded 25 total tackles, three sacks, and one fumble recovery through his first nine starts.

A standout as a rookie with a career-best 8.5 sacks, Phillips’ progress was slowed by injuries that sidelined him for 22 games across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He’s currently in the final year of his rookie deal, playing on the fifth-year option, and is set to enter free agency at the end of the season.

The Eagles, coming off a bye week, sit at 6-2 and are preparing for a Monday night showdown against the Green Bay Packers (5-2-1) at Lambeau Field on November 10. Meanwhile, the struggling Dolphins (2-7) will look to rebound when they host the Buffalo Bills (6-2) on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels out ‘indefinitely’ after dislocating elbow in loss to Seahawks

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels sustained a dislocated left elbow during Sunday night’s 38–14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, adding to what has already been a challenging season for the team.

The injury occurred late in the fourth quarter with Washington trailing 38–7. Daniels pulled the ball on a read-option play and attempted to evade a Seattle defender before awkwardly landing on his left arm. As he rolled to the ground, his elbow bent at an unnatural angle, prompting immediate concern. Commanders medical personnel rushed onto the field, immobilized the arm, and escorted Daniels to the locker room for further evaluation.

After the game, head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Daniels had suffered a left elbow injury but said he hadn’t considered removing his starting quarterback despite the game being well out of reach: “Obviously, I’m just gutted by it, I’m just bummed. We didn’t have any read plays on [the play call], and the one he was injured on is usually a run or a throw to the flat. It’s not a scramble. It wasn’t a designed read or play into that spot. If we run it 50 times, it’s either a handoff or a throw 50 times.”

According to reports from The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala, X-rays taken Monday morning were negative, with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noting that while Daniels is scheduled to undergo an MRI to determine the extent of ligament damage, “the belief is it’s not as bad as it could’ve been.” Even so, the 23-year-old is expected to miss several weeks, with the team evaluating whether to place him on injured reserve.

The setback comes amid a rocky sophomore campaign for Daniels, who has already missed time due to ankle and hamstring injuries earlier this season. After a standout rookie year in which he earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and led Washington to a 12–5 record, the Commanders have struggled to recapture that success, falling to 3–6 following Sunday’s defeat. Daniels completed 16 of 22 passes for 153 yards and an interception against Seattle, adding 51 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries before exiting the game.

Veteran backup Marcus Mariota took over under center and managed to lead a touchdown drive in Daniels’s absence. Mariota has started three games this season when Daniels was sidelined, compiling a 1–2 record with four touchdown passes, four interceptions, and a rushing score across four appearances.

Washington will likely continue with Mariota as the starter, with Daniels expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks. The Commanders next face the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Nov. 9.

Diane Ladd, Oscar-nominated actress and mother of Laura Dern, dies at 89

Diane Ladd, the acclaimed actress whose career spanned more than six decades, as well as the mother of actress Laura Dern, has died at the age of 89.

Dern, 58, shared in a statement on Monday: “My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning, at her home in Ojai, Calif.  She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created. We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Born Rose Diane Ladner on November 29, 1935, in Laurel, Mississippi, Ladd was the only child of veterinarian Preston Paul Ladner and actress Mary Bernadette Ladner. Surrounded by creativity, she began acting, singing, and dancing at an early age, eventually shortening her surname to “Ladd” when she pursued work in Hollywood. Among her extended family was playwright Tennessee Williams, whose influence loomed large over her artistic roots.

Ladd’s screen career began with television roles in the 1950s and ’60s on series such as Perry Mason, Naked City, and Mr. Novak. Her first major film credit came in the 1966 biker drama The Wild Angels, where she starred alongside Nancy Sinatra, Peter Fonda, and Bruce Dern — the man who would become her husband.

She and Dern married in 1960 and had two daughters, Diane and Laura. Diane tragically drowned at 18 months, a loss that profoundly shaped Ladd’s life. Although the couple divorced in 1969 after nearly a decade together, they maintained mutual respect for each other’s artistry. Reflecting on their marriage decades later, Ladd said, “He’s one of the world’s greatest actors, Bruce. He wasn’t such a great husband, but he’s a really great actor.”

Ladd went on to gain widespread acclaim in Martin Scorsese’s 1974 film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, playing the sharp-tongued Flo. The performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, with the film later inspiring the popular CBS sitcom Alice.  Ladd also earned Oscar nominations for David Lynch’s Wild at Heart (1990), and Rambling Rose (1991), appearing alongside her daughter Laura Dern in both films.  The mother-daughter duo went on to share the screen in Citizen Ruth (1996), The Siege at Ruby Ridge, Inland Empire (2006), and HBO’s Enlightened.

Ladd also appeared in Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983), Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), 28 Days (2000), Joy (2015), and Gigi & Nate (2022). On television, she appeared in such shows as Kingdom Hospital, Chesapeake Shores, and Young Sheldon, continuing to work well into her late 80s.

Beyond her film career, Ladd also wrote three books — Spiraling Through the School of Life: A Mental, Physical and Spiritual Discovery (2006) and A Bad Afternoon for a Piece of Cake (2016).  After Ladd was diagnosed in 2018 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a life-threatening lung disease, the candid conversations that took place between Ladd and Dern became the foundation for their joint 2023 memoir Honey, Baby, Mine: A Mother and Daughter Talk Life, Death, Love (and Banana Pudding).

Ladd was married three times; after her marriage to Bruce Dern ended, she wed William A. Shea Jr. in 1969, and in 1999 married Robert Charles Hunter, who passed away in July 2025 at the age of 77.
