Teenagers among those identified in deadly New Year’s Eve bar fire in Switzerland

Swiss authorities have now confirmed the identities of 24 people who died in a devastating fire at a New Year’s Eve celebration in the Alpine resort of Crans-Montana, as families continue to wait anxiously for news of the remaining victims. The process of identifying the dead has been slow, with authorities stating that the severity of the burns has made visual identification impossible in many cases, requiring DNA analysis.

Police in Valais canton announced that 16 additional victims were identified over the weekend, many of them teenagers. Among the newly confirmed dead are four teenaged Swiss girls, including the youngest victim so far, a 14-year-old. Six Swiss males aged 16 to 31 were also among those identified.

The victims further include two Italian teenagers aged 16, a 16-year-old with Italian-Emirati citizenship, an 18-year-old Romanian, an 18-year-old Turkish national, and a 39-year-old French citizen, the oldest victim identified to date. With these confirmations, fewer than half of the 40 people who died in the blaze remain unidentified.

Hundreds of mourners gathered Sunday for a Mass at the Chapelle Saint-Christophe in Crans-Montana. Bishop Jean-Marie Lovey told those attending that support had poured in from around the world that “Countless people join us — people whose hearts are broken. Many expressions of sympathy and solidarity reach us. Pope Leo XIV joins in our sorrow. In a moving message, he expresses his compassion and his care for the victims’ families and strengthens the courage of all who are suffering.”

The fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. Thursday at the Le Constellation bar, where hundreds had gathered to ring in the New Year. Investigators believe the blaze started when sparkler-style “fountain candles” placed on Champagne bottles were raised too close to the ceiling. The ceiling’s soundproofing material is thought to have ignited, allowing flames to spread rapidly through the crowded venue. Video footage from inside the bar shows panic as some patrons tried to put out the fire while others fled.

In addition to the fatalities, 119 people were injured, many with severe burns. Dozens were transferred to specialist burn units across Europe, including hospitals in France, Germany, Italy and Belgium. French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist said 17 patients have been treated in France alone.

A criminal investigation has been opened into the bar’s two managers. Prosecutors are examining potential charges including negligent homicide, negligent bodily harm and causing a fire through negligence. Investigators are reviewing whether the ceiling materials met safety regulations, whether the use of sparklers was permitted, and what fire safety measures — including extinguishers and emergency exits — were in place.

The tragedy has shaken Switzerland and drawn international sympathy. Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed his “deepest condolences,” saying, “Behind these numbers are faces, names, families, destinies brutally interrupted,” during a press conference. Swiss authorities have declared a national day of mourning on Jan. 9 as identification efforts continue.

Titans rookie QB Cam Ward suffers season-ending shoulder injury in 41-7 loss to Jaguars

Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward’s rookie season came to an abrupt end Sunday after he suffered a right shoulder injury early in the team’s 41-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ward was hurt on the opening drive when he dove into the end zone to complete a 7-yard rushing touchdown. He took a hit to his upper body as he crossed the goal line, then headed to the medical tent before walking to the locker room during Jacksonville’s ensuing possession.

Ward did not return for Tennessee’s next offensive series, with backup Brandon Allen taking over under center. Ward was initially listed as questionable before being ruled out prior to the end of the first quarter. He was later seen on the sideline with his right arm in a sling, confirming concerns about a season-ending injury to his throwing shoulder. Jacksonville quickly seized control after Ward’s departure, turning an early 7-0 deficit into a dominant 41-7 victory.

Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported that Ward suffered an AC joint sprain. Titans interim head coach Mike McCoy said in his postgame press conference that Ward will have more tests once the team is back in Nashville.

The No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, Ward had been the only quarterback in the league to play every offensive snap for his team through Week 17. In total, he logged all 951 of the Titans’ offensive snaps prior to Sunday.

Ward closes his first NFL season having completed 59.8% of his passes for 3,169 yards, with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also contributed as a runner, recording 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries. Before exiting Sunday’s game, he was a perfect 3-of-3 passing for 52 yards and added two carries for 11 yards and a score.

While Tennessee entered the matchup at 3-13 and already eliminated from playoff contention, the Jaguars had significant postseason implications at stake. The win secured the AFC South title over the Houston Texans and kept Jacksonville alive in the race for the conference’s top seed, pending results elsewhere.

Browns’ DE Myles Garrett sets NFL sack record in 20-18 win vs. Bengals

Myles Garrett etched his name into the NFL record book on Sunday, delivering a historic performance that capped Cleveland’s season and redefined defensive dominance in the modern era.

Late in the fourth quarter of the Browns’ 20-18 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals with just over five minutes remaining, Garrett brought down quarterback Joe Burrow for his 23rd sack of the season, establishing a new single-season NFL record. Burrow has been Garrett’s most frequent target, with Sunday’s sack marking the 12th time Garrett has taken down the Bengals quarterback, more than any other signal-caller he has faced. Garrett’s milestone surpassed the previous mark of 22.5 sacks, a total first set by Hall of Famer Michael Strahan in 2001 and later matched by Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt in 2021.

The record-breaking play came after Garrett was kept off the sack sheet for most of the afternoon — and after a quiet Week 17 against Pittsburgh. On Sunday, Garrett finally broke through, slipping past left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. to secure Burrow. As the crowd erupted at Paycor Stadium, Garrett briefly celebrated before being mobbed by teammates.

The achievement capped a season that saw Garrett record four sacks over the first six games before erupting for 18 sacks across a nine-game span. That surge included a five-sack performance against New England and a four-sack outing versus Baltimore. He reached the 20-sack threshold in Week 14, becoming just the 13th player to do so since sacks became an official statistic in 1982.

Te 2023 Defensive Player of the Year and the top pick in the 2017 draft also made history with his consistency, becoming the first player to post at least 12 sacks in six straight seasons and the only one with eight consecutive years of double-digit sacks. With 125.5 career sacks, Garrett now ranks second among players in their first nine seasons, surpassing Reggie White for the most sacks by any player under age 30.

While Garrett’s milestone headlined the day, Cleveland also delivered a dramatic finish. The Browns jumped out to a 14-6 lead thanks to two defensive touchdowns — a 97-yard interception return by Devin Bush and a 47-yard fumble return by Sam Webb. Cincinnati rallied behind touchdown catches from Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase, briefly taking a one-point lead in the fourth quarter after a failed two-point conversion attempt. That set the stage for a final Cleveland drive. Rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders converted two critical third downs to move the Browns into range, and kicker Andre Szmyt sealed the win with a 49-yard field goal as time expired.  Sanders finished 11-of-22 for 111 yards, while Burrow threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns despite the costly interception. Chase caught eight passes for 96 yards, and Higgins added six receptions for 67 yards and a score.

The win closed a challenging season for Cleveland, which finished 5-12 and out of playoff contention. While tTe Browns enter the offseason amid expected coaching changes, Garrett stands firmly atop the league’s defensive elite after signing a four-year, $160 million extension earlier this year.

See Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in the trailer for Netflix’s ‘The Rip’

Netflix has released the trailer for “The Rip,” a new crime thriller starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Damon and Affleck grapple with what to do after discovering a stash of $20 million in cash while working as police officers in Miami in the teaser for the film; with the trailer showing their characters discovering the windfall. Damon’s character implies it would be “so much easier” if they stole the money, and he and Affleck must then work together to protect the money from others.

The film’s official logline reads, “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.”

In an interview with Tudum, writer/director Joe Carnahan said of the project: “‘The Rip’ came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami-Dade police department. It’s inspired in part by his life and then, by my enduring love for those classic ’70’s cop thrillers that really valued the character and interpersonal relationships and became touchstones of that era films like Serpico and Prince of The City and more recently, Michael Mann’s Heat.”

Carnahan adds: “Working with Matt and Ben and having two, distinctly talented filmmakers, as both creative allies and the studio heads, wound up being the best of both worlds. I’ve never had as easy an experience on a movie as I had on The Rip. They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way.”

Alongside Damon and Affleck, “The Rip” stars Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sasha Calle, Néstor Carbonell, Lina Esco, Scott Adkins and Kyle Chandler.

“The Rip” arrives on Netflix on January 16, 2026. Watch the trailer – HERE.
