Alexander Zverev advanced to his first-ever Wimbledon semifinal on Wednesday, securing a dominant straight-sets victory over American Taylor Fritz at the All England Club. The second-seeded German controlled the match from start to finish on Court No. 1, dispatching the No. 6 seed 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in just under two hours.
The victory represents a major milestone for Zverev, the newly crowned French Open champion, who managed to snap a persistent seven-match losing streak against Fritz. Though Fritz historically holds an upper hand in their career head-to-head record, Zverev neutralized the American’s formidable serve by winning 77 percent of his own first-serve points and capitalizing on four of his six break point opportunities.
Fritz’s efforts were visibly compromised as the match progressed by a recurring right knee injury. The American appeared increasingly restricted in his movement starting in the second set, suffering from a flare-up of the tendinitis that had previously sidelined him during the clay-court season. Deprived of his usual mobility, Fritz struggled to find answers for Zverev’s heavy baseline hitting and strategic net approaches.
Awaiting Zverev in Friday’s semifinal is British wildcard Arthur Fery, whose surprising run continued with a straight-sets victory over Flavio Cobolli. Following his win, Zverev acknowledged the home favorite’s remarkable tournament, joking that Fery’s success had become a “Fery-tale” story. The German will enter the semifinal aiming to move one step closer to a second consecutive Grand Slam title, while Fery looks to extend one of Wimbledon’s biggest surprises.
