Amanda Seales Leaves ‘The Real’ 6 Months After Joining As Co-Host

After six months as a co-host on The Real, Amanda Seales is leaving the show.  The 38-year-old actress announced her departure during an Instagram Live, explaining that she wasn’t able to fully use her ‘voice’ and found the talk show lacking black voices ‘at the top.’

Seales said that her decision to leave had nothing to do with her co-hosts, Loni Love, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jeannie Mai and Adrienne Houghton.  ‘My contract is up at The Real, and I didn’t renew it,’ Amanda simply stated in the Instagram Live with actor Brandon Dixon. ‘It doesn’t feel good to my soul to be at a place where I can not speak to my people the way they need to be spoken to,’ she continued. ‘And where the people that are speaking to me in despairing ways are not being handled.’

Seales had guest hosted several times before officially joining the CBS talk show back in January, replacing Tamar Braxton who had been fired in 2016.  Seales holds a master’s degree in African American studies from Columbia University, and is also a series regular as Tiffany on HBO’s hit show Insecure.

Rush Legend Neil Peart To Receive Honor In His Hometown

The late legendary Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart will be honored by his hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario with the renaming of a pavilion after him. The city council agreed to renaming the Port Dalhousie area after Peart, after 81 percent of residents voted for him in an online poll.

The pavilion had previously been unanamed and stands near the location that inspired the song “Lakeside Park” from the iconic band’s 1975 album “Caress Of Steel”. Councilman Bruce Williamson told the St. Catharines Standard, “The public voting on naming is obviously fairly conclusive. Neal Peart’s been one of our most famous local individuals, and a lot of his songs have local roots, including the namesake park.”

Peart died on January 7th at the age of 67 following a battle with brain cancer.

Demi Lovato Honors Late Breonna Taylor And Makes Call For Change

Amid the protests after the death of George Floyd, Demi Lovato is also taking a moment to pay tribute to Breonna Taylor. The singer reminded her followers that Taylor — a 26-year-old black woman who was fatally shot by police in her Louisville, Kentucky, home in March — would have turned 27 on Friday.

Lovato tweeted alongside a drawing of Taylor, “It’s Breonna Taylor’s birthday this Friday. She was an EMT on the frontlines during corona. Around midnight on March 13th police broke down her door and shot her 8 times, no evidence of a crime was uncovered. #birthdayforbreonna #justiceforbreonnataylor.”

Lovato added a call to action, suggesting to call the governor of Kentucky. “The sole crime was the murder of Breonna Taylor. Her crime being asleep in her own home. @battymamzelle thought of a great way to honor Breonna’s birthday, send cards to the attorney general. The most underserved demographic in America is black women, we cannot allow them to forget Breonna,” the message states.

Lovato also touched on white privilege and how people need to do better and make changes in police departments. As she addressed her black followers, fans and coworkers, she also wrote, “I hate my white privilege. It feels gross.. like having blood money or something. But I will use it to change things in whatever way I can.”

14-Year-Old Pleads Guilty In Murder Case Of College Student Tessa Majors

A 14-year-old boy pleaded guilty to robbery in the first degree on Wednesday in the case of Tessa Majors, the 18-year-old Barnard College student who was stabbed to death in a New York City park last December. The teen will be sentenced on June 15.  Prosecutors are offering 18 months of detention, with a 6-month minimum and credit for time served in pretrial detention. The murder charge against the teen, who was 13 at the time of Majors’ death, was dropped.

During the hearing prosecutor Rachel Glantz explained that her team offered the guilty plea due to the boy’s age and the fact that this was his first experience with the juvenile justice system. After confirming to Judge Carol Goldstein that he wanted to plead guilty, the teen then addressed the court. “We went to the park… one of my friends dropped a knife. I picked up the knife… after that we saw Tessa Majors on the stairs inside Morningside Park,” he said. The teen had previously admitted that he had been present for the attack and had picked up the knife that had been used.  Two other teens were taken into custody in February and are being charged as adults. Their cases are pending.

Majors, a Virginia native, was stabbed multiple times in New York City’s Morningside Park at approximately 7 p.m. on December 11. She managed to climb up a staircase onto the street, where a security guard found her and called for help.

Three Additional Former Police Officers To Be Charged In The Killing Of George Floyd

Three more former Minnesota police officers will be charged in the killing of George Floyd, the 46-year-old Black man who died after an officer kneeled on his neck during an arrest. On Wednesday, the office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison charged Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng with aiding and abetting Floyd’s murder. The Hennepin County prosecutor had already arrested Derek Chauvin, the former police officer seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck, last week, charging him with third-degree murder and manslaughter. Ellison’s office is also planning to announce that it would be upgrading the third-degree murder charge to second-degree murder.

Floyd was killed on May 25 after the officers arrested him for allegedly attempting to make a purchase at a store with a fraudulent $20 bill. As seen in video of Floyd’s arrest, Chauvin used his knee to hold Floyd down by the neck even as Floyd’s pleads, “Please, man, I can’t breathe.” Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd, who was apparently in handcuffs, even after he stopped speaking and moving. He remained there as onlookers shouted at other officers to attend to Floyd. In another video, three other officers can be seen crowding around Floyd, who is on the floor, during the arrest. Floyd was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a hospital.

Floyd’s death has sparked days of protests and public outcry in Minneapolis and across the country.

NBA Reportedly To Approve 22-Team Return

The NBA is planning a return to finish the 2019-20 season, and the league is reportedly is set to approve a 22-team format to conclude the campaign.  The proposal includes every playoff round keeping its normal Best-of-7 format. Under the proposal noted above, eight more regular season games will be played by each of the 22 teams, so it’s still possible that teams outside of a playoff spot could jump into the mix.

The NBA’s board of governors is reportedly set to approve a plan for 22 teams to restart the season in Orlando, Fla., including an eight-game regular-season schedule before the playoffs. The top eight teams in each conference will be invited to the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando as well as the New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs and the Washington Wizards.

The league would tip off again July 31 and a Game 7 of a potential NBA Finals series would be Oct. 12. The NBA Draft and free agency would begin soon after. The board of governors needs a three-fourths passage on the plan but it is reportedly expected to pass overwhelmingly. Health and safety protocols were not detailed extensivel, but reportedly players will need to shower in their hotels, bench players would sit in spread-out rows and there will be no guests in attendance until at least the playoffs.

The vote on the plan is expected Thursday.

MLB Rejects Players’ 114-game Plan With No Plan To Counter Offer

Major League Baseball has rejected the players’ offer for a 114-game regular season in the coronavirus-delayed season with no additional salary cuts. The union said it did not plan to make a counterproposal.

Players made their proposal Sunday, up from an 82-game regular season in management’s offer last week. Opening Day would be June 30 and the regular season would end Oct. 31. MLB told the union it had no interest in extending the season into November, when it fears a second wave of the coronavirus could disrupt the postseason and jeopardize $787 million in broadcast revenue.

Teams and players hope to start the season in ballparks with no fans, and teams claim they would sustain huge losses if salaries are not cut more. The sides agreed to a deal March 26 in which players accepted prorated salaries in exchange for $170 million in advances and a guarantee that if the season is scrapped each player would get 2020 service time matching what the player accrued in 2019.

MLB’s proposal on May 26 would lower 2020 salaries from about $4 billion to approximately $1.2 billion, establishing a sliding scale of reductions. The union’s offer would have salaries total about $2.8 billion, leaving each player with about 70% of his original salary.
