President Trump Now Says Coronavirus Task Force “Will Continue On Indefinitely”

A day after President Donald Trump stated that he planned to disband the White House coronavirus task force, Trump announced Wednesday that it will now continue indefinitely. In a series of tweets, Trump said the task force, led by Vice President Mike Pence, has done a “fantastic job of bringing together vast highly complex resources that have set a high standard for others to follow in the future.” Trump said later Wednesday that the task force will also be “very focused” on the development of a coronavirus vaccine and treatments and he would be announcing “two or three new members to the task force” as soon as Monday.

The president’s apparent change of plans comes a day after he told reporters during a visit to a mask factory in Phoenix that he would wind down the task force.  The President said at the time, “I think that, as far as the task force, Mike Pence and the task force have done a great job. But we’re now looking at a little bit of a different form, and that form is safety and opening, and we’ll have a different group probably set up for that.”

Trump’s announcement to keep the task force going comes as more than 70,000 people in the U.S. have died from COVID-19, and there have been more than 1.2 million reported cases across the country.

Blood Thinners May Help Improve Survival Among Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients

In treating hospitalized COVID-19 patients, anticoagulants–  or blood thinners — are helping improve their chances of survival.  In recent weeks, physicians have noticed that the sickest coronavirus patients are more prone to forming blood clots — an unexpected symptom for a respiratory virus. Clotting means “patients are at increased risk for deep vein thrombosis, strokes, heart attacks” and pulmonary embolisms.

Mount Sinai COVID Informatics Center researchers said in a study, published in the May 6 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, could provide new insight on how to treat and manage coronavirus patients once they are admitted to the hospital.
The research also showed that the difference in bleeding events among patients treated with and without anticoagulants was not significant. The Mount Sinai researchers say their work outlines an important therapeutic pathway for COVID-19 patients.

NBA Teams Allowed To Reopen Practice Facilities This Friday

The NBA is targeting Friday as the day teams may reopen their practice facilities to a limited number of players at a time. However just a few teams – the Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets – plan to make their facility available on that day.

The Houston Rockets had planned to open Friday, but Texas Gov. Greg Abbott pushed back the opening of gyms until May 18 so the Rockets will follow those guidelines. The Atlanta Hawks plan to open sometime next week, but more teams remain at least a week away from reopening.

In a memo the NBA informed teams they could reopen where stay-at-home orders have been eased. In a previous memo, the NBA provided a detailed and extensive 14-page to-do list to ensure safe and clean environments for players. Also, no more than four players at a time can use the practice facility for workouts.

White House To Wind Down Coronavirus Task Force To Focus On Covid-19 Treatments, Economic Reopening

The White House coronavirus task force is set to wind down in the weeks ahead as the administration looks to shift focus from the day-to-day public health response toward an economic reopening of the country. Vice President Mike Pence confirmed that there are discussions underway about disbanding the coronavirus task force.

“We’re having conversations about that,” Pence told a group of reporters. “I think we’re having conversations about that and about what the proper time is for the task force to complete its work and for the ongoing efforts to take place on an agency-by-agency level. And we’ve already begun to talk about a transition plan with FEMA.” Pence added, “We’re starting to look at the Memorial Day window, early June window as a time when we could begin to transition back to having our agencies begin to manage — begin to manage our national response in a more traditional manner.”

President Trump has shown an eagerness for the country to get back to work, expressing optimism that the virus can be successfully contained; however the rate of new infections continues to rise in much of the country, even as some early U.S. hotspots have begun to bring the virus under control.
