Texas Rangers defeat Houston Astros in Game 7 to advance to World Series

The Texas Rangers are headed to the World Series for the third time in franchise history, and the first time since 2011. The Rangers defeated the Houston Astros 11-4 in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series Monday to win the American League Championship Series.

The Rangers dominated from the start, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, and blew the game open with a four-run fourth inning to expand their lead to 8-2. Texas right fielder Adolis García was chosen ALCS MVP, going 4 for 5 at the plate Monday with two home runs and five RBIs. García earned five home runs in the last four games of the series.

The Rangers will be seeking their first World Series championship — after making it to back-to-back World Series in 2010 and 2011, they lost to the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals respectively.

The Rangers will face the winner of the NLCS between the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks, who will play their Game 7 on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. The World Series is scheduled to begin Friday in Arlington, Texas.

Off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot charged with attempted murder for trying to cut engines midflight

An Alaska Airlines flight made an emergency diversion to Portland, Oregon, on Sunday after an off-duty pilot , identified as 44-year-old Joseph Emerson, unsuccessfully tried to shut down the plane’s engines midflight.

Alaska Airlines said in a statement that the incident happened onboard Alaska Airlines Flight 2059, which was operated by Horizon Air. The flight was heading from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco with 80 passengers and four crew members onboard, including Emerson. The airline said Emerson was traveling in the jump seat in the cockpit and unsuccessfully tried to “disrupt the operation of the engines.” The Horizon captain and first officer detained Emerson and landed the plane just before 6:30 p.m. PDT in Portland, where Emerson was taken into custody without incident. The FBI said that no injuries were reported.

Emerson was arrested by the Port of Portland Police Department after the plane landed safely at Portland’s airport, and was charged with 83 felony counts of attempted murder, 83 counts of reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft.  The FBI’s field office in Portland said it was also investigating the incident, and adding: “There is no continuing threat related to this incident.”

On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration sent guidance to U.S. air carriers that the incident was “not connected in any way shape or form to current world events.”  Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressed gratitude to the flight crew and air traffic controllers who safely got the plane to Portland, posting on social media that the FAA will focus on “any safety considerations for the future that emerge from investigations.”

Alaska Airlines said, “We are grateful for the professional handling of the situation by the Horizon flight crew and appreciate our guests’ calm and patience throughout this event.”

Two Israeli hostages are released by Hamas

Hamas released two more hostages Monday, identified as Israelis Nurit Yitzhak and Yocheved Lifshitz. The announcement comes three days after the release of two Americans who had been held captive by Hamas in the Gaza Strip — Judith Raanan and her teenage daughter, Natalie.

In a statement on Telegram, the military wing of Hamas said it had decided to release the two women for “compelling humanitarian” reasons. Video broadcast on Egyptian state television showed the women on stretchers inside ambulances, speaking with people who appeared to be health workers. The ambulances appeared to be near the Rafah crossing, on Gaza’s southern border with Egypt. The International Committee of the Red Cross said in a statement posted on social media that it had facilitated the release of the two captives and transported them out of Gaza on Monday night local time: “We hope that they will soon be back with their loved ones.”

According to Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari, at least 212 people were taken hostage by Hamas after terrorists attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing more than 1,000 people. Israel and Hamas have since been at war, and according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, retaliatory airstrikes in Gaza killing at least 5,087 people as of Monday morning.

More than 200 hostages remain captive, however, Hamas has said it does not have custody of all the hostages and that some were taken captive by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, another militant group based in Gaza. Hamas has said it will free its captives only when Israeli airstrikes in Gaza come to a halt.

I’ve been watching videos of you guys in the theaters dancing and prancing and recreating choreography, creating inside jokes, casting spells, getting engaged, and just generally creating the exact type of joyful chaos we’re known for 😇 One of my favorite things you’ve done was when you supported Cruel Summer SO much, I ended up starting The Eras Tour show with it. For old times sake, I’m releasing the live audio from the tour so we can all shriek it in the comfort of our homes and cars PLUS a brand new remix by @lpgiobbi 😜 Thank you, so much, forever, wow, just thank you!!!”
