Woman accused of killing beloved Broadway singing coach is arrested on manslaughter charge

The NYPD said on Tuesday that the woman suspected of shoving a beloved Broadway voice coach, causing her to suffer fatal injuries, has turned herself in. 26-year-old Lauren Pazienza of Port Jefferson on Long Island has been charged with manslaughter in the death of 87-year-old Barbara Maier Gustern.

For nearly two weeks, NYPD had been searching for Pazienza, who is accused of approaching Gustern from behind and pushing her to the ground just steps away from her apartment near West 28th Street and 8th Avenue in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. Gustern was responsive after the attack, telling a friend who came to her aid that she had “never been hit so hard” in her life. However, she later slipped into a coma and was taken to Bellevue Medical Center, where it was discovered that she had suffered traumatic damage to the left side of her brain; Gustern died March 15. The motive behind the seemingly unprovoked attack is unknown at this time.

Gustern was fondly regarded in New York’s theater community. She coached the cast of the 2019 Broadway revival of the musical “Oklahoma!,” The New York Times reported. She also once coached rock singer Debbie Harry of the group Blondie.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki tests positive for COVID-19

White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced Tuesday that she tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time in five months.  In preparation for traveling with President Biden to Europe, Psaki said she took a polymerase chain reaction test Tuesday morning, which was positive. Per guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Psaki will no longer be traveling with Biden.

Psaki said in a statement:  “Thanks to the vaccine, I have only experienced mild symptoms. In alignment with White House COVID-19 protocols, I will work from home and plan to return to work in person at the conclusion of a five-day isolation period and a negative test.”  This is the second time Psaki has tested positive for COVID-19; in October 2021, she announced she tested positive after members of her household came down with the virus.

Since Psaki said she had two socially distanced meetings with Biden on Monday, he also was tested for the virus, which was negative via a PCR test taken on Tuesday morning.  Biden plans to travel to Brussels for a NATO summit Thursday, before heading Friday to Poland to speak with President Andrzej Duda.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-sign running back Leonard Fournette to three-year, $21 million deal

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have re-signed Leonard Fournette to a three-year deal that has a $21 million base value, reuniting the running back with quarterback Tom Brady and keeping the veteran under contract through the 2024 season. Sources say that the contract could be worth up to $24 million with incentives.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released Fournette in 2020, who then joined the Buccaneers just days later. Fournette was part of the Buccaneers’ 2020 Super Bowl-winning team alongside Brady, and re-signed with Tampa Bay last year in a one-year deal worth $3.25 million.

The 27-year-old totaled 1,266 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns in 14 games last season. Fournette totaled 812 yards and eight scores on the ground and another 454 yards and two scores as a pass catcher.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams speaks out on the city’s vaccine mandate and how it affects the NBA, MLB

New York City mayor Eric Adams addressed the city’s current COVID-19 vaccination mandate during a news conference on Tuesday, and stated that professional sports teams are going to have to wait for restrictions to ease.  Adams said: “Right now, we’re going to take some complaints. But when this is all said and done, people are going to realize this is a thoughtful administration and we got it right. So baseball, basketball, businesses, all of those things, they have to wait until that layer comes.”

Due to the private employer mandate currently in place in New York City, unvaccinated professional athletes in NYC are not allowed to compete in home games — meaning the mandate applies to the Nets, Knicks, Mets and Yankees.  Notably, Brooklyn point guard Kyrie Irving has repeatedly stated he will not be getting the vaccine; and as a result, had only been allowed to compete in away games for the Nets.  As MLB’s Opening Day and the NBA postseason approach, unvaccinated athletes are at risk of being limited in play time.  The Yankees’ home opener is April 7 and the Mets’ home opener is April 15, and the NBA play-in tournament starts April 12 with the playoffs set to start April 16.

Adams says he doesn’t “feel any pressure doing this job at all, because I’m going to do what’s right. We’re going to do it in the right way. We’re going to follow the science … we’re going to make the right decision. And in New York, no matter what you do, this is 8.8 million people and 30 million opinions, so you’re never going to satisfy New Yorkers, so you must go with the logic, your heart and the science.”

Dave Grohl sets release date for metal EP ‘Dream Widow’

Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl will digitally release his new metal EP, recorded under the moniker Dream Widow, on March 25.

Dream Widow is connected to the Foo Fighters’ recently issued horror-comedy film, Studio 666.  In the flick, Grohl and company rent a Los Angeles mansion to record their 10th album, only to discover the space is haunted — it turns out that twenty-five years before, the metal group Dream Widow worked there for an ill-fated project, their singer becoming possessed and murdering his bandmates.

The Dream Widow EP features the recently released “March of the Insane,” which is part of the project Dream Widow were recording in the film.  Grohl told Variety that he recorded the Dream Widow EP on his own. saying: “When we started writing the script, we had the idea of there being this epic metal opus that — once completed — would release the demon in the house. I said, ‘Oh, f**k, I’ve got a million riffs.’ So I recorded this 13- or 14-minute long instrumental just by myself that’s very metal, and it’s meant to be from the [fictional] band Dream Widow. Then, I furthered that idea by making a whole record by Dream Widow that would be their lost album that they recorded before they were murdered.”
