FDA authorizes Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for use in adolescents ages 12 to 15

The US Food and Drug Administration has expanded the emergency use authorization for Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine to include adolescents ages 12 to 15.  This is the first Covid-19 vaccine in the United States authorized for use in younger teens and adolescents; the vaccine had previously been authorized for people age 16 and older. Covid-19 vaccines from Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are authorized for use in people age 18 and older.

The FDA reviewed data submitted by Pfizer, who said at the end of March that a clinical trial involving 2,260 12-to-15-year-olds showed the vaccine’s efficacy is 100% and it is well tolerated.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is scheduled to meet Wednesday to advise the CDC on whether to recommend use of the vaccine in this age group. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky will then decide whether the agency will recommend the vaccine’s use in the new group. Vaccinations for 12-to-15-year-olds are not expected to begin until after that recommendation.  The Biden administration has said it will quickly mobilize to ready vaccinations for 12-to-15-year-olds through the federal pharmacy program, pediatricians and family doctors.

Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown will miss remainder of season with wrist injury

The Boston Celtics confirmed that Jaylen Brown has a season-ending “left scapholunate ligament tear”, tweeting: “This past weekend Celtics forward Jaylen Brown was diagnosed with a torn scapholunate ligament in his left wrist. Brown is expected to have the torn ligament surgically repaired later this week, and will be out for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.”  It’s unclear when Brown suffered the injury. He was already sidelined with a sprained ankle.

Brown missed the last three games after his already injured ankle was aggravated by a collision with Jayson Tatum in the Celtics’ loss to Portland on March 2. He’s missed 10 games this season he’s battled shoulder bursitis, non-COVID-19 illness and hip and knee ailments this season.

Brown was in the midst of the best season of his career, averaging 24.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game this season.

Tim Tebow to sign 1-year contract with Jacksonville Jaguars

Tim Tebow will sign a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars with a chance to make the team as a tight end. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner had approached representatives from the Jaguars to request a tight end tryout. He also worked out with Jaguars tight ends coach Tyler Bowen.

The 33-year-old Tebow hasn’t appeared in a game since 2012. He was unsuccessful in attempting to make the New England Patriots in 2013 and the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. He then chose to try his hand at baseball, but announced back in February he was leaving the minor leagues after spending three seasons with the New York Mets organization.

Apple TV+ announces Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry series debut date

Apple TV+ announced Monday that “The Me You Can’t See,” a multi-part documentary series from co-creators and executive producers Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, will premiere May 21 on the streaming service.

According to a news release about the series, “Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry guide honest discussions about mental health and emotional well-being while opening up about their mental health journeys and struggles. Featuring high-profile guests, alongside a wide range of people from across the globe living with the challenges of mental health issues and addressing their emotional well-being, the series transcends culture, age, gender, and socioeconomic status to destigmatize a highly misunderstood subject and give hope to viewers who learn that they are not alone. The producers partnered with 14 accredited and respected experts and organizations from around the world to help shed light on different pathways to treatment.”

Winfrey said in a statement, “Now more than ever, there is an immediate need to replace the shame surrounding mental health with wisdom, compassion, and honesty. Our series aims to spark that global conversation.”

Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, said: “We are born into different lives, brought up in different environments, and as a result are exposed to different experiences. But our shared experience is that we are all human. The majority of us carry some form of unresolved trauma, loss, or grief, which feels — and is — very personal. Yet the last year has shown us that we are all in this together, and my hope is that this series will show there is power in vulnerability, connection in empathy, and strength in honesty.”

Chrissie Hynde announces upcoming Bob Dylan covers album

On Monday, Chrissie Hynde announced her upcoming album of Bob Dylan covers titled Standing in the Doorway: Chrissie Hynde Sings Bob Dylan. The LP will be out on May 21st.

In a statement, Hynde explains that she recorded the album during the Covid-19 lockdown with her Pretenders bandmate James Walbourne: “A few weeks into lockdown last year, James sent me the new Dylan track ‘Murder Most Foul.’ Listening to that song completely changed everything for me. I was lifted out of this morose mood that I’d been in. I remember where I was sitting the day that Kennedy was shot — every reference in the song. Whatever Bob does, he still manages somewhere in there to make you laugh because as much as anything, he’s a comedian. He’s always funny and always has something to say. That’s when I called James and said, ‘Let’s do some Dylan covers’ and that’s what started this whole thing.”=

The album will be accompanied by a television special, Tomorrow Is a Long Time, which will premiere Monday, May 24th (which happens to be Dylan’s 80th birthday).
