2020 MTV Video Music Awards: See The Full List Of Winners

The 2020 Video Music Awards, hosted by Keke Palmer, kicked off the show by acknowledging “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman, who died last week after a four-year battle with colon cancer at 43. Palmer said, “we dedicate tonight’s show to a man whose spirit touched so many. He is a true hero, not just onscreen, but in everything he did. His impact lives forever.”

Amid the global coronavirus pandemic, a live audience was not featured.  The show’s performances were held at locations all over New York City, with the first performance of the night from The Weeknd, who performed “Blinding Lights” at Hudson Yards in NYC. BTS sang their first all English language language single, “Dynamite,” and Miley Cyrus performed her latest track, “Midnight Sky.”

The first award of the night for best collaboration went to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande for their hit single “Rain of Me.” Gaga was honored with the first ever Tricon Award, and also won the award for ‘Artist of the Year.’  Taylor Swift won the Best Direction VMA for her 2020 directorial debut, ‘The Man.’

Taylor Swift Tops Charts For Fifth Straight Week With ‘Folklore’

Taylor Swift’s Folklore is spending it’s fifth straight week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, tying Lil Baby’s My Turn for the most weeks atop the list in 2020. Folklore is also the first album to rule for five weeks in a row at No. 1 since Drake’s Scorpion back in 2018.

If Folklore logs a sixth week at No. 1, it will have the most weeks at No. 1 for any album since Drake’s Views held onto the top spot for 13 total weeks at No. 1 in 2016. Further, Folklore would be the first album with six weeks in a row at No. 1 since Views, which spent its first nine weeks at No. 1.

Hurricane Laura Kills 6, Leaving Widespread Damage Along Louisiana Coastline

Hurricane Laura’s winds produced more damage than its storm surge as it hammered portions of Louisiana, killing at least six people. Laura came ashore as a Category 4 storm early Thursday near the Texas border, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands. Laura made landfall with sustained winds of 150 mph, devastating southern Louisiana communities for miles.

Laura was later downgraded to a tropical storm about 35 miles south of Little Rock, Arkansas, with sustained winds of 40 mph as of Thursday evening. In addition to widespread reports of wind damage, some communities were affected from storm surge and flooding. More than 843,000 customers in Texas and Louisiana were without power Thursday evening, according to PowerOutages.us.

As Laura makes its way northeast, “flooding rainfall and tropical force winds” were spreading over parts of Arkansas, the National Hurricane Center said Thursday, and Gov. Asa Hutchinson asked residents to “pay attention to the weather.” Laura still could deliver damaging wind gusts in parts of northern Louisiana and Arkansas though Thursday evening, the National Hurricane Center said, and was expected to drop another 4 to 8 inches of rain across parts of Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi.

Laura is the seventh named storm to make landfall in the US so far this year, a record for the most to do so before the end of August. There have been four tropical storms and three hurricanes.

President Trump Formally Accepts Republican Nomination For President on Night 4 Of RNC

The Republican National Convention concluded on Thursday with President Donald Trump formally accepting the GOP nomination for a second term as president in a speech delivered from the White House South Lawn.  Chants of “four more years!” broke out at White House, after Pres. Trump called the upcoming presidential contest “the most important election in the history of our country.”  In stark contrast, however, as the president delivers his acceptance speech, protesters gathered at Black Lives Matter plaza near the White House chanting “vote him out.”

Other speakers on Day 4 of the RNC were the President’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, Alice Johnson, a 63-year-old woman whose life sentence was commuted by Trump after advocacy from Kim Kardashian West,  Pat Lynch, president of the Police Benevolent Association, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, and Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor and personal attorney to the president.

NHL Postpones Stanley Cup Playoff Games On Thursday And Friday In Protest Of Racial Inequality

The NHL postponed two Stanley Cup playoff games that were scheduled on Thursday, and two games scheduled for Friday. League officials drew wide criticism for their initial mild reaction to current social justice issues, which prompted teams in the NBA and WNBA to refuse to play their playoff games on Wednesday and also led several MLS and Major League Baseball teams to decline to play in protest of racial injustice.

The NHL’s postponements involved the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders, and the Vegas Golden Knights had been scheduled to face the Vancouver Canucks. Friday’s postponements involvdc Game 4 of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s series against the Boston Bruins, and Game 4 of the Colorado Avalanche’s series against the Dallas Stars.

A statement issued jointly by the NHL and the NHL Players’ Assn. read: “After much discussion, NHL Players believe that the best course of action would be to take a step back and not play tonight’s and tomorrow’s games as scheduled. The NHL supports the Players’ decision and will reschedule those four games beginning Saturday and adjust the remainder of the Second Round schedule accordingly. Black and Brown communities continue to face real, painful experiences. The NHL and NHLPA recognize that much work remains to be done before we can play an appropriate role in a discussion centered on diversity, inclusion and social justice. We understand that the tragedies involving Jacob Blake, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others require us to recognize this moment. We pledge to work to use our sport to influence positive change in society. The NHLPA and NHL are committed to working to foster more inclusive and welcoming environments within our arenas, offices and beyond.”

Miami Marlins And NY Mets Hold Moment of Silence Before Walkout Protest, Cancelling Game

The New York Mets and Miami Marlins jointly walked off the field after a moment of silence, draping a Black Lives Matter t-shirt across home plate after choosing not to play Thursday night.

After other games around baseball were postponed, both teams stood around their dugouts in full uniforms shortly before the 7:10 p.m. scheduled first pitch, and the national anthem was played and all players and coaches stood. Mets outfielder Dominic Smith then led New York onto the field. Players took their positions, then reserves and coaches filed out of both dugouts and stood silently for 42 seconds. Both teams then returned to their clubhouses, leaving only the BLM t-shirt at home.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen criticized Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred’s handling of player protests this week and alleged Manfred was pressuring New York to stage a symbolic walkout against players’ wishes. Van Wagenen apologized for his comments later Thursday, saying the idea to walk out and return was actually hatched by Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon.

Netflix Cancels ‘Altered Carbon’ After Two Seasons

Netflix has canceled Altered Carbon after two seasons. The sci-fi series premiered on the streaming service in 2018 and aired its second season in February, while an anime movie that takes place before the events of season 1 was released on March 19.

Altered Carbon, based on the 2002 novel by English author Richard K. Morgan, was created by Laeta Kalogridis.  The show follows a former soldier turned investigator Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman in season 1, Anthony Mackenzie in season 2) solving a murder in a world where consciousness can be transferred to different bodies. The series also starred James Purefoy, Martha Higareda, Chris Conner, Dichen Lachman, Ato Essandoh, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Lela Loren, Simone Missick, and Torben Liebrecht.

Altered Carbon‘s official cancellation comes just days after Netflix canceled The Society and I Am Not Okay With This. Although Netflix executives were pleased with the performances of the shows, the uncertainty around production dates and budget increases due to the coronavirus pandemic contributed to the cancellations.
