Dow Jones Shows 423 Point Gain As Stock Market Closes Higher On Eve Of Presidential Election

The three major U.S. indexes rose on Monday as markets prepared for Election Day and the potential effect of the result on long-awaited stimulus. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 423.45 points, or 1.6%, while the S&P 500 increased by 1.23%. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.42% as its rise was limited by declining tech stocks.

Analysts predicted that the results of the presidential election, as well as the various Senate races, could lead to an end in the ongoing stalemate in negotiations over another round of stimulus in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However on Monday, the Treasury Department scaled back its estimates for borrowing through the end of the year, predicting it would borrow $617 billion from October through December down from $1.22 trillion estimated in early August.

The major averages entered the month coming off of their worst week since March 20 amid rising COVID-19 cases throughout the country.

U.S. Elections Project Says 96M Have Already Voted Across The U.S.

The U.S. Elections Project said on Monday that more than 96 million Americans have already voted ahead of Tuesday’s election — almost twice the number from four years ago.

According to the independent election monitor, by early Monday afternoon, 61 million mail-in ballots have been received and 35 million voters have cast ballots at in-person early voting centers. The total number of people who voted early during the 2016 campaign was 50 million.

A similar number was reported by the NBC News Decision Desk/Target Smart, which said almost 94 million Americans had voted as of 8 a.m. Monday. Early turnout in Texas and Hawaii has already surpassed those states’ entire vote totals from four years ago. Eight other states have seen early vote totals at 90% of their 2016 figures — Montana, Washington, North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada, Florida, New Mexico and Tennessee.

49ers Jimmy Garoppolo And George Kittle Join List Of San Francisco’s Injured Players

The San Francisco 49ers will be without quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and All-Pro tight end George Kittle for an extended period of time due to injuries sustained during their game against Seattle on Sunday. Garoppolo’s ankle injury and Kittle’s foot injury will sideline them indefinitely, with Garoppolo expected to miss at least six weeks with a high ankle sprain and Kittle expected to be out eight weeks with a broken bone in his foot.

Garoppolo and Kittle are the latest in a long line of injuries this season for the defending NFC champions. San Francisco lost defensive ends Nick Bosa, Dee Ford and Solomon Thomas; top cornerback Richard Sherman, No. 1 receiver Deebo Samuel; and running backs Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Jeff Wilson Jr. for extended periods of time this season.

Garoppolo originally sprained his ankle in a Week 2 win at the New York Jets and missed the next two games. Garoppolo re-injured the ankle in Sunday’s 37-27 loss at Seattle and was pulled in the second half. Nick Mullens will replace Garoppolo as starter beginning Thursday night against Green Bay.

Kittle hurt his knee in Week 1 and missed the next two games before returning with a 15-catch, 183-yard performance against the Eagles. The Niners are hoping to get Jordan Reed back from a knee injury to take Kittle’s place against Green Bay.

NFL Suspends Chicago Bears’ Javon Wims After Fight With New Orleans Saints’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson

The NFL announced on Monday that they have suspended Chicago Bears wide receiver Javon Wims for two games following his on-field scuffle with New Orleans Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Wims has appealed the suspension, with a hearing set for Tuesday.

The incident occurred during the third quarter of the Saints’ 26-23 overtime win over the Bears on Sunday. Chicago quarterback Nick Foles completed a 5-yard pass to receiver Allen Robinson before cameras caught Wims running up to confront Gardner-Johnson from behind. Wims appeared to reach for Gardner-Johnson’s mouthpiece before punching him in the helmet with his right hand. Wims then struck Gardner-Johnson again in the helmet before both players wrestled each other to the ground. Wims was ejected for his role in the scuffle, but Gardner-Johnson was allowed to remain in the game.

Gardner-Johnson denied instigating the fight in Sunday’s game. His denial came after NFL Media reported that Wims told Bears officials he was spit on by Gardner-Johnson prior to the punch. Gardner-Johnson insisted Monday that he was “innocent.”

Wims had one catch for nine yards in the Bears’ loss. The third-year wide receiver has five catches for 35 yards and a touchdown on the season. Gardner-Johnson had seven tackles and two tackles for a loss for the Saints.

Eve Announces She Is Leaving As Co-Host Of “The Talk” To Focus On Growing Her Family

After four seasons, Eve is saying goodbye as co-host on CBS’s The Talk. The 41-year-old rapper announced her departure on air Monday, explaining why she made the difficult decision to leave the popular talk show in December.

“It’s been a crazy year, obviously, for all of us,” said Eve, who lives in England with her husband, Maximillion Cooper. “And I’ve been so grateful that I’m able to stay here in London and do the show. But I can’t see, for me, the foreseeable future of traveling back at the moment and have decided that at the end of December, this will probably be my last time on the show, in this capacity as a host.”

The coronavirus pandemic also played a big role in her decision, as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Sunday a that a second national shutdown will begin this week. “We’re on another lockdown from Thursday, and that’s another reason why,” Eve said. “Obviously staying home has been such a blessing because my husband and I got to know each other in a different way, a beautiful way. So I want to be closer to him. I want to concentrate on expanding our family, being with my family.”
