Yeshiva University suspends student clubs after Supreme Court’s LGBTQ ruling

In the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision earlier this week that ordered Yeshiva University to recognize an LGBTQ student group, the school has suspended all student club activity. In an email to students on Friday, university officials said that it “hold off on all undergraduate club activities while it immediately takes steps to follow the roadmap provided by the U.S. Supreme Court to protect YU’s religious freedom.”

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court cleared the way for the undergraduate LGBTQ group, ‘YU Pride Alliance’, to gain official recognition from the Jewish university in New York.  By a 5-4 vote Wednesday, the justices lifted a temporary hold on a court order that requires Yeshiva University to recognize the group. The YU Pride Alliance describes itself as “a supportive space for all students, of all sexual orientations and gender identities, to feel respected, visible, and represented.”

Following the ruling, the president of Yeshiva University, Rabbi Ari Berman, said that faith-based universities have the right to establish clubs within its understanding of the Torah.  He said:“Yeshiva University simply seeks that same right of self-determination. “The Supreme Court has laid out the roadmap for us to find expedited relief and we will follow their instructions.” Berman also said ” the university’s commitment and love for our LGBTQ students are unshakeable.”

The university, an Orthodox Jewish institution in New York, argued that granting recognition to the Pride Alliance would violate its sincere religious beliefs.  However, the club argued that Yeshiva’s plea to the Supreme Court was premature, also noting the university already has recognized a gay pride club at its law school. A New York state court sided with the student group and ordered the university to recognize the club immediately.

Las Vegas Aces defeat Connecticut Suns to win their first WNBA Championship

The Las Vegas Aces defeated the Connecticut Sun with a score of 78-71 on Sunday to win their first WNBA championship. The loss for the No. 3 seeded Sun was a disappointing finish for the franchise, who has the second most wins in WNBA history, but has never won the championship.

The Aces fought off rallies by the Sun before clinching the title in the fourth game of the best-of-five series. 29-year-old Chelsea Gray led the Aces with 20 points, five rebounds and six assists on 9 of 13 from the field, and was named the most valuable player of the finals. Gray said emotionally: “My teammates are awesome. I worked so hard for this.”  The Aces finished with the best regular-season record in two of the past three seasons. The Aces’ postseason reflected the regular-season dominance that led them to tie Chicago for the best record in the league.

The Aces hired Becky Hammon, who had been an assistant with the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs, after Bill Laimbeer – who had been the Aces’ coach for four years – stepped down before the season. Hammon took over a team led by A’ja Wilson, who won the league’s Most Valuable Player Award in 2020. Wilson, 26, also won her second MVP Award this season, and was named the defensive player of the year.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ WR Mike Evans and New Orleans Saints’ CB Marshon Lattimore are both ejected after brawl during Sunday’s game

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans and New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore were both ejected from Sunday’s game for fighting. Evans and Lattimore were in the center of a bench-clearing brawl that occurred in the fourth quarter of a game between the Saints and Buccaneers at the Caesars Superdome.

Tampa Bay were preparing to punt after Tom Brady’s pass to Scotty Miller on third-and-5 fell incomplete with 12:55 left in the fourth quarter. Lattimore was covering Miller on the play and appeared to wave his arm at Brady in a dismissive manner as Brady walked by him after the play.  Brady turned to look at Lattimore and started to approach him as Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette ran over to shove Lattimore. Lattimore shoved Fournette back as both Saints safety Marcus Maye and Evans got involved. Evans turned around and ran onto the field, shoving Lattimore and knocking him to the ground. Maye then went after Evans as Lattimore got up to approach Evans again. Maye and Evans hit the ground together, and Lattimore ended up on the ground under Evans and Maye.  The brawl continued to escalate and Lattimore stood up, yelling as teammates tried to pull him back.  After everyone cooled down, Saints defensive end and team captain Cameron Jordan walked Lattimore off the field with an arm around his shoulder.

Lattimore and Evans were both ejected after a quick discussion by officials. As Evans left the field, he appeared to shove a cameraman and gave his gloves to two fans.

The Buccaneers went on to defeat the Saints 20-10.

Showtime documentary on Sinead O’Connor to debut in theaters for awards-qualifying run

“Nothing Compares,” a documentary about the life and career of Sinead O’Connor, will be released in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Sept. 23 for a one-week run that qualify it for Academy Award consideration. The film’s theatrical release will come days ahead of the docu’s Sept. 30 Showtime streaming and on-demand debut.

Directed by Kathryn Ferguson, the 97-minute film traces O’Connor’s rise to worldwide fame after “Nothing Compares 2 U” was released in 1990, as well as the Irish singer’s eventual exile from pop mainstream after she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II on “Saturday Night Live” in 1992. The docu also examines other headline-grabbing controversies.

The film is Ferguson’s documentary feature directorial debut. She shares: “In 2018 in Ireland, we were gearing up to the abortion referendum, and we just had the equal marriage referendum a few years prior, so it just felt absurd that Sinead’s voice wasn’t part of the conversation. She was somebody who had been so bold and brave and who really kicked the door down, particularly (in Ireland). I felt like she needed to be part of the conversation, and it felt quite urgent.”
