Maroon 5 to launch 2023 Las Vegas residency

Maroon 5 will launch a new headlining residency at Park MGM in Las Vegas. The band announced the residency will take place at Dolby Live at Park MGM, beginning March 24, 2023. The band — which consists of members Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, James Valentine, Matt Flynn and PJ Morton — wrapped up the North American leg of their world tour last month, and still have dates scheduled in Asia this fall.

Following the announcement, Maroon 5 shared a logo that reads “M5LV” and “The Residency” on Instagram: “M5LV • THE RESIDENCY  We’re headed back to Vegas!  Tickets on sale Monday Oct 3 at 10AM PT. 🚀💫 ‘  They also shared a list of the show dates; sixteen shows are planned from March until August 2023, with tickets going on sale beginning on Oct. 3 at: www.ticketmaster.com/Maroon5Vegas.

Earlier this month, Levine, 43, came under scrutiny after a series of cheating accusations when Instagram model Sumner Stroh claimed in a now-viral TikTok that she had a year-long affair with Levine. In response, Levine issued a statement on social media: “A lot is being said about me right now and I want to clear the air. I used poor judgment in speaking with anyone other than my wife in ANY kind of flirtatious manner. I did not have an affair, nevertheless, I crossed the line during a regrettable period in my life.”

Millions without power in Florida after Hurricane Ian makes landfall, causing life-threatening storm surges, catastrophic flooding and devastating winds

Hurricane Ian was downgraded to a tropical storm Thursday morning after leaving a path of destruction across Florida with life-threatening storm surges, trapping people in flooded homes and knocking out power to 2 million people.

Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa around 3 p.m. Wednesday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane with 150 mph winds; the storm is believed to be one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded making landfall in Florida. The massive storm also brought torrential rainfall, and a catastrophic storm surge that left entire coastal communities under feet of water. Ian was the first Category 4 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico since Rita in 2005.

Officials warned, however, that the powerful storm was not over. Early Thursday, the National Hurricane Center reported that Ian had maximum sustained winds of near 65 mph with higher gusts as it moved slowly through central Florida on its way to the western Atlantic.  By 5 a.m., Ian was around 55 miles southwest of Cape Canaveral and moving northeast at 9 mph, the hurricane center said. Florida’s Atlantic coast, from northeast of Orlando into Georgia, could see a 6-foot storm surge. The storm is moving toward the northeast near 8 m.p.h., with a turn toward the north-northeast – and a move off the coast of Florida – expected later today. It’s expected to pick up speed during the day on Friday and into the evening as it approaches the coast of South Carolina.

Life-threatening storm surges and hurricane conditions were possible on Thursday and Friday along the coasts of northeast Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, where Ian was expected to move inland. The governors of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia all preemptively declared states of emergency.

Justice Department seizes 10 million fake fentanyl-laced pills

The Justice Department’s Drug Enforcement Agency announced that between May 23 and Sept. 8, federal agents seized about 10.2 million fentanyl-laced pills and 82 pounds of fentanyl power in more than 100 investigations over the past five months, across all 50 states. The DOJ said those responsible for trafficking it into the U.S. are the Mexican cartels, particularly the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). 35 cases were linked directly to one or both of the primary Mexican cartels responsible for the majority of fentanyl in the United States.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in a news release:  “Across the country, fentanyl is devastating families and communities, and we know that violent, criminal drug cartels bear responsibility for this crisis  The Justice Department, including the extraordinary professionals of the DEA, is working to disrupt and dismantle the operations of these cartels, remove deadly fentanyl from our communities, and save American lives.”

The operation resulted in 390 cases, including 51 cases linked to overdose poisonings. Garland said: “The amount of fentanyl taken off the streets during this surge is equivalent to more than 36 million lethal doses removed from the illegal drug supply.” Garland also said 338 weapons, including rifles, shotguns, pistols, and hand grenades, were also seized.

The DOJ said fentanyl is a deadly threat to Americans because it is 50 times more potent than heroin, adding that 107,622 deaths were due to drug poisoning or overdose with 66% of those deaths attributed to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.  Drug traffickers have starting selling fentanyl in a variety of bright colors, shapes and sizes. “Rainbow” fentanyl was first reported to DEA in February 2022 and it has now been seized in 21 states.

New York Jets QB Zach Wilson cleared to play Week 4 against Pittsburgh Steelers

NY Jets head coach Robert Saleh said on Wednesday that quarterback Zach Wilson has been cleared to make his season-debut after missing the season’s first three games.  The second-year quarterback will start Sunday’s road game against the Steelers as long as all goes well for Wilson during this week’s practices.  Pending confirmation from Wilson’s Los Angeles-based doctor, Saleh was optimistic about Wilson, saying he will “absolutely” start, adding: “He’s very comfortable. He’s in a great mental state. Everyone is comfortable with where he’s at physically.”

Wilson tore his meniscus and suffered a bone bruise during New York’s first preseason game against the Eagles. On Aug. 16, he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in Los Angeles, performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.  While initially the team said Wilson had a two- to four-week recovery, the Jets announced four days before the start of the season that Wilson would return Week 4 at the earliest.

The Jets are off to a 1-2 start with 15-year veteran Joe Flacco filling in for Wilson. Sunday’s game would mark Flacco’s 22nd start against the Steelers if Wilson cannot return. Flacco went 10-11 against Pittsburgh during his 11-year run as Baltimore’s starting quarterback, while Wilson has yet to face the Steelers.

NY Yankees Aaron Judge hits 61st home run to tie Roger Maris for American League Record

61 years since Roger Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961, his all-time American League record has been tied by a fellow NY Yankee slugger. 30-year-old Aaron Judge went deep for the New York Yankees against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night, hitting his 61st home run of the season and tying Maris’ long-standing record. The home run came in the seventh inning against Toronto pitcher Tim Mayza, driving the ball over the left-field fence at Rogers Centre.

Judge’s 61st home run came in the Yankees’ 155th game of the season, and Judge’s 151st, with seven more games still to play in the regular season. Judge moved past the 60 home runs Babe Ruth hit in 1927, which had stood as the major league mark until Maris broke it in 1961 on the final day of the ’61 season. All three players reached these achievements while playing for the Yankees.

Maris’ record has been exceeded six times, first when Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1998. Judge is the first player to hit 60 home runs since 2001, when Barry Bonds (73) and Sammy Sosa (64) each accomplished the feat; however, all three players have had their records tainted by reported steroid use. McGwire admitted using banned steroids, while Bonds and Sosa denied ‘knowingly’ using performing-enhancing drugs.

Judge also leads the Major Leagues in nearly every offensive category, and tops the AL all three Triple Crown stats: batting average, home runs and RBIs. If he holds onto those leads, Judge may also become the first Triple Crown winner in a decade, and just the second in 55 years. He would also become the first Yankee to earn the honor since Mickey Mantle did so in 1956.

LeAnn Rimes shares the video for ‘Spaceship’ filmed by husband Eddie Cibrian

LeAnn Rimes is sharing the music video for “Spaceship,” from her new album God’s Work, released earlier this month.  Rimes said in an Instagram post announcing the video: “tears. rage. loneliness…. when it came time to create a video for ‘spaceship’, i knew it needed to reflect those same feelings and be as intimate as the lyrics. so, i recruited the best in the business to direct this video for me, my husband, eddie. he has an incredible eye and knows me so well, which really allowed me to expose my most primal, emotional self. “

The video was spontaneously shot by LeAnn’s husband, Eddie Cibrian, while on an RV trip throughout California. Using his iPhone to film, Cibrian shot the video in 4 takes under 30 minutes.  Cibrian said in a statement: “We were on our way back from Mammoth when I said we should stop in Alabama Hills to scout a possible location. Once we got there and found a spot, the sun was setting and there was something magical at that exact moment. We knew we needed to capture something then. It was intimate, emotional, and powerful. We only did four takes, which were a mix of sunset and sunrise to capture both sets of light. It all came together beautifully.”

“Spaceship” is the opening track of Rimes’ 19th album, God’s Work.  The 12-track album features artists including Ziggy Marley, Mickey Guyton, Aloe Blacc, Ben Harper, Ledisi, Sheila E., Robert Randolph, Táta Vega, and more.  Rimes also recently announced Joy: The Holiday Tour which will kick-off December 2nd through December 18th.

Netflix shares teaser trailer for Season 4 of ‘You’

Netflix has shared a new teaser-trailer for Season 4 of the drama ‘You.’ In the new promo, Penn Badgley’s character Joe Goldberg is now residing more than 3,000 miles away from New York, under the alias of professor Jonathan Moore. Goldberg shares that he’s somehow become a teacher in the U.K., saying in his trademark inner monologue: “I’m not the lovable bookstore manager in New York, or the shop clerk in L.A. or the doting husband in the suburbs. No. Not any more.  Allow me to introduce myself. I’ve gone through a bit of refinement upon crossing the pond, and living in London has allowed me to bury the past, if you will.”

Season 3 concluded with Goldberg traveling to Paris to follow his new obsession, Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle). The psychological thriller has added some new faces for Season 4, including Tilly Keeper, Amy Leigh Hickman, and Ed Speleers. Badgley and Gabrielle are set to reprise their Season 3 roles, alongside previously announced new stars Charlotte Ritchie and Lukas Gage.

The first three seasons of “You” are streaming on Netflix. Part 1 of Season 4 is set to premiere Feb. 10th, and Part 2 drops on March 10th.  You can take a look at the trailer for Season 4 – here.

Katie Couric announces breast cancer diagnosis

Former Today Show anchor Katie Couric has gone public with her breast cancer diagnosis.  The 65-year-old Couric posted on social media Wednesday, sharing that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in June: “Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. On June 21st, I became one of them. As we approach #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, I wanted to share my personal story with you all and encourage you to get screened and understand that you may fall into a category of women who needs more than a mammogram. Head to the link in my bio or katiecouric.com to read my essay.”

In an essay on her website, Couric detailed that she had a mammogram June 20 after missing the routine checkup in 2021. Her doctor took a biopsy and informed Couric the next day that the test showed cancer. Said Couric:  “I felt sick and the room started to spin. I was in the middle of an open office, so I walked to a corner and spoke quietly, my mouth unable to keep up with the questions swirling in my head.”  Couric’s first husband, Jay Monahan, died from colon cancer at age 42 in 1998  Her sister, Emily Couric, died from pancreatic cancer at age 54 in 2001, and her mother and father both have a history with cancer.

Couric had surgery to remove an olive-sized tumor in July and began radiation treatments Sept. 7; she just completed her final round of radiation this week. She will also take an aromatase inhibitor for five years. Couric ended her post urging others to take care of their health: “Please get your annual mammogram. I was six months late this time. I shudder to think what might have happened if I had put if off longer. But just as importantly, please find out if you need additional screening.”
