Statewide emergency declared in Florida as Tropical Storm Ian is expected to strengthen to hurricane

As Tropical Storm Ian heads towards Florida and is expected to become a hurricane Sunday night, reaching major hurricane strength early next week, Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued statewide state of emergency, citing the risk of a major hurricane making landfall on Florida’s western coast.

Currently located in the Caribbean Sea with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph and higher gusts, forecasters predict that Ian is expected to become a major Category 3 hurricane by Monday or Tuesday.  According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm is 540 miles southeast of the western tip of Cuba and could approach the Florida Keys and the southern and central area of the Florida peninsula beginning Monday through to Wednesday morning

The potential hurricane is expected to bring 2 to 6 inches of rain to the Keys and peninsula and heavy rainfall to northern and western Florida, as well as to other states in the southeastern U.S. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. These rains may produce flash and urban flooding across the Keys and the peninsula through midweek.

Over the weekend, President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration for Florida as the state faces a potential major hurricane from the current storm, the White House said. Biden’s approval of a Florida emergency declaration orders authorized federal aid.

New England Patriots’ QB Mac Jones suffers left leg injury in loss to Baltimore Ravens in Week 3

The New England Patriots second-year quarterback Mac Jones suffered a left leg injury with just under two minutes remaining in their Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Jones hopped off the field in pain without putting any weight on his leg, and did not return to the game. As of press time, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said he had no update on Jones.

The injury occurred when Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell hit Jones high, and came down on the backside of his left leg. Jones immediately knew something was wrong right after the hit, getting up on his right leg and hopping over to the sideline. According to multiple sources, Jones was screaming in pain while he was carried down the stairs to the locker room.

The Ravens defeated the Patriots 37-26. Jones struggled Sunday afternoon, completing just 22 of 32 passes for 321 yards and three interceptions, and rushing five times for 31 yards and one touchdown.

Red Hot Chili Peppers release Eddie Van Halen tribute song “Eddie”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are honoring the late Eddie Van Halen with a tribute song to the late Van Halen guitarist, titled “Eddie.”

RHCP singer Anthony Kiedis wrote in an Instagram message: “Sometimes we don’t realize how deeply affected and connected we are to artists until the day they die. Eddie Van Halen was a one of a kind. The day after his death Flea came into rehearsal with an emotional bassline. John, Chad and I started playing along and pretty soon with all our hearts, a song in his honor effortlessly unfolded. It felt good to be sad and care so much about a person who had given so much to our lives. In the end, our song asks that you not remember Eddie for dying but for living his wildest dream.” Van Halen’s son, Wolfgang Van Halen, replied to the emotional post with a trio of heart emoji.

The tribute to the rock icon, who died in Oct. 2020, is the second track from the band’s upcoming Return of the Dream Canteen album (due out Oct. 14), following the single, “Tippa My Tongue.”
