Sarah Paulson is set to executive produce and star as the late Gwen Shamblin Lara in the HBO Max scripted adaptation of its docuseries, The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin.

Shamblin rose to fame with her ‘Weigh Down Workshop,’ a Christian-based diet program, and founded the the controversial, Tennessee-based Remnant Fellowship Church.  The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin explored the practices of the Remnant Fellowship Church and the legacy of Lara — a flamboyant and charismatic figure with a carefully curated image, who was accused of emotional, psychological and physical abuse and exploitation for the church’s alleged cult-like practices.

Taylor Swift announces title of the 13th track on her upcoming album Midnights, called “Mastermind”

Taylor Swift dropped the name of the 13th song on the tracklist for her upcoming album Midnights. The singer, 32, revealed the song is titled “Mastermind.”

Swift shared the news in a new TikTok series called “Midnights Mayhem With Me.” Said Swift: “I know that I have a habit of dropping cryptic clues and Easter eggs when giving you information about my music, and I am not here to deny that. But I am here to defy that. Welcome to a new series I’m calling ‘Midnights Mayhem With Me.’” Using a bingo ball cage, Swift explained that she was going to allow fate to decide what track titles to announce and in what order, saying: “In this cage are 13 Ping Pong balls labeled one through 13, each representing a track on the Midnights album. So, let’s leave it up to fate.”  The first ball that rolled out of the cage was the one labeled with the number 13, Swift’s favorite number. She said, “Track 13…because of course.” Picking up a red phone, Taylor then revealed the name of the song ‘Mastermind’.

Swift announced her upcoming album at the 2022 MTV VMAs in August while accepting the Video of the Year award.  She has continued to drop hints about Midnights since then, such as by sharing the cover art and posting behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the album. In an August Instagram post, Swift described Midnights as “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered” throughout her life.

Midnights will be released Oct. 21.

Mariah Carey plans to release her ‘lost’ alternative-rock album

Mariah Carey revealed in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, that she made an alternative rock album in the ’90s, but she kept it hidden until two years ago. The 1995 album Someone’s Ugly Daughter by the band ‘Chick’ was her ‘lost grunge’ album, and Carey’s lead vocals were recorded over by a musician named Clarissa Dane. In a 2004 interview with Dane, the Chick singer explained that she was Carey’s roommate at the time of the recording sessions.  While the Chick album isn’t currently available to stream, upon its initial release it had major label support and spawned singles such as “Malibu” and “Demented.”

Back in 2020, Mariah tweeted – “Fun fact: I did an alternative album while I was making [my 1995 album] Daydream ..my friend Clarissa … performs the lead, [with] me as a hidden layer.” Carey said at the time she recorded it “just for laughs, but it got me through some dark days.”

Now according to a new interview with Carey on Rolling Stone’s Rolling Stone Now podcast, a version with Carey’s original vocals has evidently been recovered by the star, and she plans to release it. Carey discovered the buried version of her secret alt-rock album with her own lead vocals intact. Carey said she is planning to release those versions, and is also planning something ‘mysterious’ related to the project with ‘another artist.’ It is currently unknown who the other mystery artist is.

Residents of Jackson, Mississippi file class action lawsuit over water crisis

Residents of Jackson, Mississippi, have filed a class action lawsuit against the city, its current and former mayors, city officials and engineering companies, alleging that years of neglect culminated in a recent water crisis for more than 150,000 people.  Last week, the city finally had clean water restored following a boil water advisory from July when tests showed water quality was “cloudy.”

The residents asked the court in the lawsuit to force the city to repair the water system and to cancel any bills or debts held by residents for unsafe water or water that was not delivered, and also asked for community health centers to care for people who may have been injured by contaminated water and for an unspecified amount of money for damages.

Flooding of the Pearl River exacerbated the water crisis by causing water pressure issues in the city’s already-damaged system. The plaintiffs also allege that they were poisoned by lead and other contaminants released in Jackson’s drinking water before the water supply failed in August. The lawsuit reads: “These residents lack more than just drinking water, or water for making powdered baby formula, cooking, showering, or laundry. During the long period where the city pipes had no water pressure — and were unable to facilitate the flow of water — residents of Jackson could not flush their toilets for days at a time. This public health crisis, decades in the making, was wholly foreseeable by Defendants’ actions and has left Jackson residents in an untenable position — without access to clean, safe water in 2022 in a major United States city.”

Federal prosecutors press charges against 47 people in Covid scheme for stealing cash meant to help feed needy kids

On Tuesday, federal prosecutors announced charges were filed against 47 people accused of carrying out the biggest Covid fraud scheme to date, stealing $250 million in a plot that exploited a federal program designed to feed needy children in Minnesota. U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger said in a statement: “This was a brazen scheme of staggering proportions. The defendants worked extremely fast, stealing money at a breakneck pace,” he added at a news conference announcing the charges.”More than 125 million fake meals are at issue in this case.”

Prosecutors say the fraud was overseen by Aimee Bock, who ran a nonprofit called Feeding Our Future. She has denied wrongdoing and argued that if fraud occurred, it was without her knowledge.  Prosecutors say charities, restaurants and individuals were involved in the fraud by claiming they were providing meals for thousands of underserved children — but in fact, the money was going to commercial real estate, luxury cars, and fancy homes. Nonprofits such as Feeding Our Future were supposed to sponsor and oversee the restaurants, community centers and other places where the meals were to be provided.

The indictments say Feeding Our Future opened more than 250 meal distribution sites throughout Minnesota and fraudulently obtained and disbursed more than $240 million in funds from the Federal Child Nutrition Program, run by the Agriculture Department. Many of the defendants are charged not only with fraud but with bribery because the government alleges the charities took kickbacks from the food sites in exchange for steering them federal grants.

The FBI said in court records that in the summer of 2020, state officials became suspicious of the large number of meals being claimed at sites sponsored by Feeding Our Future and sought to deny payments at many of them. State officials ultimately contacted the FBI, which began investigating, and conducted a series of raids in January that closed down the funding streams. The Justice Department has seized property, vehicles and bank accounts worth $50 million so far.

Veteran defenseman P.K. Subban retires from the NHL

Veteran defenseman P.K. Subban announced Tuesday on social media he will retire from the NHL after 13 years in the league.  The 33-year-old Subban posted on Twitter and Instagram: “I remember my dreams of playing in the NHL and winning a Stanley Cup, similar to the guys on the Don Cherry Rock’em Sock’em tapes at the end of every volume, with the black eyes, broken bones, and tears of joy. To this day, I still dream about it. However, the end of this chapter is closing and after 13 years in the NHL, I have made the decision to retire.”

Subban, a three-time All-Star, spent seven seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, three with the Nashville Predators and three with the New Jersey Devils.  Last season, Subban scored five goals and logged 17 assists in 77 games last season for the Devils; and in 834 career appearances, he totaled 115 goals and 467 points.  Subban won the 2012-13 James Norris Memorial Trophy, given to the league’s top defenseman, and won a gold medal with Canada at the 2014 Winter Games. He also won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy last season, an honor given by the NHL for leadership and humanitarian contributions.

Subban concluded: “I never looked at myself or ever felt I was ‘just a hockey player.’  I always looked at myself as a person who happened to play hockey. Having that perspective allowed me to enjoy every shift like it was my last, celebrate every goal with emotion, and play every game as if someone paid to watch me play who had never seen me play before …  I look forward to the road ahead, and the many exciting opportunities to come. I’m excited to share what those are with you all when the time comes!”
